Job summary

Georgia-Pacific's Toledo, OR Containerboard facility seeks a qualified Safety Specialist to lead development, implementation, and maintenance of safety programs. The role provides coaching, training, and development to advance the site safety environment and performance, reporting to the site Safety & Health Manager.

The position supports safety improvement opportunities with a focus on hazard reduction and Human and Organizational Performance integration to achieve ZERO incidents.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science or higher in an Environmental Health and Safety field, or 4+ years in a safety leadership role.
• Experience with federal/state safety regulatory requirements.
• Experience using Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Excel, WORD, Power BI).

Responsibilities

• Manage competing demands with a systems approach, strong organizational skills, teamwork, and clear prioritization.
• Lead contractor safety management, machine guarding, ergonomics, and related safety programs.
• Design, implement, and lead safety programs, compliance strategies, and management systems.
• Prepare regulatory trainings and raise safety awareness among facility personnel.
• Evaluate site safety programs and implement improvements across the site.
• Assist in developing safety strategies and reporting for corporate initiatives.
• Lead Operational Learning Team sessions based on Human and Organizational Performance (HOP).
• Provide safety support to site personnel and develop SIPs to align with Path to Zero.
• Plan, promote, organize, direct, and audit safety activities in the field.
• Lead safety teams and CSOs to maximize value and compliance.
• Serve as SME for mill projects, applying PtD principles.

Our Team

Georgia-Pacific Toledo is a producer of brown paper used to make cardboard and is a leader in recycling in the Northwest. The Toledo Mill is located within a 10-minute drive to the Pacific Ocean. Many outdoor activities are available near the mill including fishing, hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, and boating.

What You Will Do

• Manage competing demands which requires a strong systems approach to work, strong organizational skills, teamwork, and the ability to establish, communicate and adhere to priorities
• Primary areas of responsibility include contractor safety management, machine guarding, walking and working surfaces, MOPED, Save My Life permitting, ergonomics, and hearing conservation.
• Design, implement, and lead safety programs, compliance strategies, and management systems
• Prepare and conduct regulatory training and work with facility personnel to increase awareness of safety improvement needs
• Perform ongoing evaluations of site safety programs facility-wide
• Assist in preparation of business/corporate-sponsored safety strategies, recommendations, and reporting
• Participate in and/or lead Operational Learning Team sessions which are based on Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) models aimed at better identifying and implementing improved safeguards (failing safely)
• Respond to site personnel needs for assistance and support on safety-related issues
• Assist with the development of site Safety Improvement Plans (SIPs) aimed at ensuring systems are put in place to successfully execute the Path to Zero safety strategy
• Plan, promote, organize, direct, and audit safety related activities in field
• Provide leadership to mill critical hazard related safety teams and Compliance System Owners (CSOs) to ensure maximum value creation
• Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) for large and small mill projects, ensuring compliance with all applicable safety requirements and applying Prevention through Design (PtD) principles

Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)

• Bachelor of Science or higher in an Environmental Health and Safety field of study OR Four (4) or more years of experience in a safety leadership and management role
• Experience and Knowledge of federal/state safety regulatory requirements
• Experience using Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Excel, WORD, Power BI)

What Will Put You Ahead

• Associate Safety Professional (ASP) and/or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certifications
• Experience with safety management in a manufacturing environment
• Experience in manufacturing, pulp and paper, or chemical facility
• Experience establishing sustainable systems for safety, compliance, and continuous improvement
• Knowledge of occupational safety management and ability to apply and achieve results
