Job summary

Island Energy Services (IES) is seeking a Safety Specialist to design, plan, and execute safety, security, and emergency response systems across our Hawai‘i operations. The role requires proficiency with federal/state safety regulations and the ability to draft updates to guidelines, policies, and programs supporting personnel and assets.

The ideal candidate will manage safety programs, coordinate with emergency responders, and train staff.

Qualifications

  • Three to five or more years of relevant experience.
  • High school diploma.
  • Proven experience understanding and applying safety policies and processes, preferably within an industrial and or retail environment.
  • Proven experience in multi-tasking of work projects.
  • Knowledge of OSHA standards and Safe Work Practices.
  • Experience in developing, delivering, and supporting training programs.
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in relevant field, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Supports safety culture aligned with Our Four B’s and incident-free workplace.
  • Supports safety management systems: safe work practices, contractor safety, training, assessments, and continuous improvement processes.
  • Manages radio communication system, gas detection equipment, and safety data sheet database.
  • Assists with industrial hygiene monitoring.
  • Assists with emergency response systems: development, implementation, training, assessment, and improvement.
  • Builds relationships with municipal fire departments and company partners.
  • Supports spill drill coordination.
  • Ensures compliance with Maritime Transportation Security Act requirements in collaboration with SSEM Team.
  • Promotes safe operations across IES retail locations through site assessments and training.
  • Provides guidance on customer, employee, contractor, and fuel-handling safety, including emergency response and spill prevention.
  • Collaborates with team and communicates effectively; maintains commitments and fosters constructive problem solving.
  • Performs other duties consistent with scope; drafts guidelines and leads special projects.

SUMMARY

The Safety Specialist (SS) position provides general to complex level support in the design, planning and execution of safety, security, and emergency response systems for IES. Incumbent is expected to have proficient knowledge of federal and state safety and health compliance regulations and is responsible for assembling written updates to applicable guidelines, policies, programs and initiatives that support the safety and security of IES personnel, assets and operations.

Desired competencies include: accuracy, attention to detail, proficiency in managing relationships and information as it relates to safety, security and emergency management activities. The ideal candidate must be able to establish priorities under tight deadlines and have a proven track record as a motivated, self-starter who can work on multiple projects and priorities within a fast-paced environment. Prior experience in public speaking and classroom training is required. Prior relevant experience in the energy and or retail or similar industries is strongly preferred.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Safety
  • Supports the SSEM Team with driving the safety culture to align with the four B’s - Believe, Behave, Belong, Become, and ultimately, towards an incident-free workplace.
  • Support the safety management systems such as safe work practices, contractor safety, training, assessments, and continuous improvement processes. Additional processes that are supported include management of change, process hazards reviews, incident investigations.
  • Manages radio communication system, gas detection equipment, and safety data sheet database.
  • Assists with industrial hygiene monitoring.
Emergency Management
  • Assists with managing the emergency response systems, including plans, programs, and policies. This includes development, implementation, training, assessment, and continuous improvement of system elements.
  • Builds relationships with municipal fire departments and other company partners.
  • Supports the SSEM team with spill drill coordination.
Security
  • Works with the SSEM Team to ensure compliance with the Maritime Transportation Security Act requirements.
Retail Operations Support
  • Partners with Retail Operations leadership to promote safe operations across IES retail locations through site assessments, training, incident management, corrective actions, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Provides guidance on customer, employee, contractor, and fuel-handling safety, including emergency response, spill prevention, construction activities, and facility projects.
Teamwork
  • Works effectively with coworkers and others by sharing ideas in a constructive, positive manner; listening to and objectively considering ideas and suggestions from others; keeping commitments; keeping others informed of work progress and issues; addressing problems and issues constructively to find mutually acceptable and practical solutions; and respecting the diversity of the IES workforce in actions, words, and deeds.
OTHER DUTIES
  • Performs other duties consistent with the scope of the position.
  • Maintains commitment to a high standard of compliance with all IES policies and procedures and reports actual and potential concerns as appropriate to management to ensure IES core value of Kīnā'ole, doing the right thing.
  • Must be able to draft guidelines, processes and procedures and other written documents.
  • As assigned, lead SSEM special projects across business units of IES.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience

  • Must pass pre-employment background check including, medical, drug and job-related physical abilities testing as required.
  • Must be able to wear Personal Protective Equipment as required.
  • Must be able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC) within sixty days of hire.
  • This is a safety sensitive position and random drug testing is required.
  • Valid driver’s license with clean abstract.
  • Willingness to devote the time as needed to meet packet and task deadlines.
  • Willingness to maintain or increase skills.
  • Willing to support a 24/7 operation.

PAY AND BENEFITS

Island Energy Services offers a competitive salary that commensurate with qualifications and experience. The hiring salary range for this position is $104,000 to $134,000 commensurate with education and experience.
