Position Summary

eGenesis is seeking a hands-on, highly skilled Safety Specialist to support and lead workplace safety initiatives across multiple sites in Wisconsin and Indiana. This role requires a strong background in OSHA compliance, experience with laboratories, GMP environments, and BSL-2 biohazardous materials, and an understanding of animal and agricultural safety practices. The Safety Specialist will play a key role in building a proactive safety culture by implementing effective programs and ensuring compliance with safety regulations, while being comfortable working in environments ranging from biotech laboratories to farm-based animal facilities.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Support implementation of EHS software systems (e.g., VelocityEHS) for chemical inventory management, incident reporting, and regulatory compliance
  • Assist in emergency preparedness planning and drills across sites
Leadership and Strategy
  • Partner with the EHS Director to implement and maintain robust safety programs across all sites
  • Promote a strong safety culture through engagement, visibility, and accountability
  • Serve as a resource and mentor to site teams for all safety-related initiatives
Regulatory Compliance and Risk Management
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, and other applicable federal, state, and local regulations
  • Maintain safety programs for laboratory and manufacturing environments (including GMP and BSL-2 areas) and agricultural operations
  • Conduct regular inspections, audits, and risk assessments to identify hazards and ensure corrective actions
  • Lead incident investigations, root cause analysis, and implement measures to prevent recurrence
Animal and Farm Safety
  • Oversee safety for animal handling and farm operation, including biosecurity
  • Ensure proper PPE, protocols, and training for employees with pigs and agricultural equipment
Training and SOP Development
  • Develop and deliver safety training programs for employees at all levels, covering laboratory safety, farm safety, chemical handling, and emergency preparedness
  • Create and revise safety-related SOPs for integration into Qualio/Veeva (our controlled document management system)
Continuous Improvement
  • Stay current with industry trends, regulations, and best practices in EHS
  • Continuously evaluate and improve EHS programs to enhance performance and compliance
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, or related field
  • 5+ years of safety management experience, preferably in biotech, pharmaceutical, or agricultural environments
  • Familiarity with OSHA, EPA, and DOT regulations
  • Strong communication and leadership skills; able to work in varied environments (labs and farm sites)
  • Hands-on experience with GMP, laboratory safety, and BSL-2 biohazards
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of animal handling safety and agricultural operations strongly preferred
  • Professional certification such as CSP or CIH is highly desirable

Work Environment

This job operates in multiple environments, including office, laboratory, farm, and outdoor environments. Will involve exposure to animals, biohazardous materials, and agricultural conditions. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, copy machines, filing cabinets, and fax machines. This position will require some travel (about 20% of time) between sites in Northwest, IN, but the primary location will be Greater Madison area of WI. Ability to respond to emergencies outside normal business hours as needed.
