Safety & Risk Management Consultant- Northern CA is a remote position for the Northern CA area and reports to the corporate office. The consultant provides safety, risk, and loss control consultation services to clients of varying sizes and complexities. The role focuses on assessing client needs, developing tailored safety and risk prevention programs, and implementing effective risk mitigation strategies across various industries.

The Consultant collaborates with clients to enhance safety culture, ensure regulatory compliance, and reduce workplace hazards. The goal is to deliver actionable insights that improve safety performance and operational efficiency, while delivering exceptional service aligned with the organization’s mission of protecting lives and promoting a safe working environment.

The primary purpose is to help clients save lives, prevent injuries and illnesses, and protect them from harm.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • This is a remote position, generally working from home or a virtual office. Occasional visits to a traditional office may be required for meetings, training, or other events.
  • Provide clients with onsite (and virtual) safety and risk management services.
  • Overnight travel may be required due to client locations. Ability to bundle client work to maximize time and client servicing utilization.
  • Self-managed scheduling focused on client demands, service schedules, travel, bundling efficiencies, risk and underwriting needs, client expectations, incident and injury trends, client hazards and exposures, injury potential, and other factors.
  • Create action plans for safety and risk management services, visiting (onsite or virtual) some clients several times per year.
  • Conduct “one-time loss control surveys” onsite or virtual.
  • Work with clients to exercise independent consideration for workplace safety recommendations, evaluating the effectiveness of hazard controls associated with operations.
  • Perform work that may affect the business substantially, including liability, based on required skillsets to provide safety services and recommendations.
  • Maintain superb communication with client business owners, executives, operations, risk and safety, insurance, human resources, finance, benefits, and others.
  • Possess a solid understanding of workplace safety and risk principles and practices.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Consultant position requires minimal supervision and must have:

  • Evaluate client operations (onsite or virtually) to determine workplace hazards, assess the effectiveness of hazard controls, and develop written recommendations; may assist with plan implementation.
  • Solid working knowledge of safety and risk principles, loss and risk control, safety regulations, best practices, and core understanding of workers’ compensation, general liability, and related disciplines.
  • Ability to conduct safety and risk evaluations to determine loss potential.
  • Gain client support for improvements and create realistic timeframes for operational enhancements that positively impact safety and risk programs.
  • Review existing safety programs for compliance and functional effectiveness.
  • Lead trainings and meetings on workplace safety topics; may provide client training on safety, injury prevention, and cost controls, including root-cause analysis; assist clients in implementing safety programs.
  • Strong communication skills for high-level professional interactions (presentations, emails, letters, meetings, report writing, calls). Client interactions may be one-on-one or in groups to foster collaboration and guidance.
  • Aptitude to respond effectively to specific safety problems or concerns raised by clients.
  • Develop systematic action plans to reduce risk, evaluate progress, and suggest program modifications as needed.
  • Show strong organizational skills and self-motivation; ability to interact with diverse personalities and maintain client-oriented writing and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in root cause analysis for risk mitigation and loss analysis to prevent injuries and improve safety.
  • Proficient use of the Internet and safety resources as research tools.

Qualifications

  • Have the ability to conduct risk evaluations to determine loss potential, advise management to gain support, and create realistic timeframes for improvements.
  • Understand and review existing safety programs for compliance and effectiveness.
  • Ability to conduct high-level professional communications with senior management and clients to foster collaboration and guidance.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Essential Functions:

  • This is a full-time position with typical hours Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.; client needs may require extended hours, holidays, or weekends.
  • Requires travel, including overnight stays, approximately 3–4 times per month.
  • Work environments include offices, manufacturing facilities, or construction sites; may involve exposure to extreme conditions. Personal protective equipment may be necessary.
  • Physical work includes standing, walking, bending, and lifting up to 25 pounds on occasion; vision requirements as needed for job tasks.

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Minimum safety designation such as COSS, COHST, ARM, CRM, ALCM, CSHCO, CCSHCO, ASP, CSP, or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 7 years as a loss control consultant (or related experience).
  • Active membership in the American Society of Safety Professionals or a similar organization.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and internet research tools, including AI.
  • Promotes data analytics and AI use in risk prediction, mitigation, and consulting.

Additional Eligibility / Qualifications

  • Must have a valid driver’s license throughout employment.
  • Must authorize enrollment in an Employers Pull Notice Program (DMV driving records) for the duration of employment.
  • Must have continuous access to a reliable vehicle and be able to drive for company business.

Work Environment: This position requires the Consultant to work primarily from home with a dedicated, distraction-free space. Travel to client locations may be required.

Travel may include vehicles, public transportation, flights, or other means. If necessary for safety, ergonomic enhancements may be provided by the company.
