General Dynamics NASSCO seeks a Safety Specialist to provide health and safety guidance and ensure adherence to Federal, State, and local regulations. The role includes inspections, reporting, and safety training to support a safe shipyard environment in San Diego.
The ideal candidate has a High School diploma (or equivalent) plus safety-related education or certification, strong communication skills, and the ability to access military bases.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee must be able to work at heights and in confining or restricted spaces aboard vessels under construction/repair. Daily inspections require climbing ladders, working at heights, walking on scaffolding, observing use of tools and operation of equipment/machinery. Physical dexterity must allow for bending, reaching, climbing, crawling, and working on ladders and scaffolding. Must be physically able to walk to all yard locations. Must be able to handle stressful situations. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds of weight. Visual abilities required include close, distance and peripheral vision, depth perception and color recognition. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to vapors, gases, dust, welding/burning fumes, and smoke. Must be able to spend up to 70% of time in an outdoor shipyard environment in all climates. The noise level is usually moderate to extremely noisy 70% of the time, which may include sirens, horns, chipping, and hammering.
Ensures NASSCO’s Injury and Illness Prevention Program meets company and regulatory requirements and is effectively implemented. Responsible for the effective and efficient operation of the Safety and Fire Departments and for administering NASSCO’s Safety Management System.
$80,800 - $109,900
This pay range is a reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role. It takes into account the wide range of factors considered in making compensation decisions; including but not limited to skill sets, experience, training, and education.
