Job summary

My Hr is seeking a Safety Professional in the Berkeley area to support the ALS-U project across design, procurement, construction, and commissioning. You will work with EH&S, Engineering, Facilities, and contractors to identify hazards, perform risk assessments, and implement effective controls.

The role requires 5+ years of safety experience, a relevant bachelor’s degree, and strong skills in JHA/AHD development, field safety oversight, and technical documentation.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Provide safety management and technical support for the ALS-U project across all lifecycle stages.
  • Collaborate with EH&S, Radiation Protection, Engineering, Facilities, and contractors.
  • Identify hazards, perform risk assessments, and implement hazard mitigation.
  • Develop and review JHAs, AHDs, work packages, safety plans, and related docs.
  • Evaluate project-specific hazards and verify engineering, admin, and work-practice controls.
  • Conduct field safety observations, inspections, and readiness verification activities.
  • Coordinate corrective actions for unsafe conditions and changing field conditions.
  • Support construction safety activities, including lifting, electrical, fall protection, and confined space.
  • Participate in design/engineering reviews and safety considerations for drawings and procedures.
  • Support WPC activities, control verification, and readiness assessments.
  • Provide technical support for DOE, federal, and project safety requirements.
  • Assist in readiness reviews, hazard verification, and action-item closure.
  • Review incidents, support root-cause analyses, and safety lessons learned.

Safety Professional
Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide safety management and technical support for the Advanced Light Source Upgrade (ALS-U) Project throughout design, procurement, fabrication, construction, installation, testing, commissioning, readiness reviews, and project closeout.
  • Function as an integrated member of the ALS-U safety organization and work closely with client EH&S, Radiation Protection, Engineering, Facilities, project management, technical teams, and contractors.
  • Perform hazard identification, risk assessments, and hazard mitigation for construction, installation, testing, and other project activities.
  • Develop, review, and implement Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Activity Hazard Documents (AHDs), work packages, safety plans, and other work-planning documentation.
  • Evaluate industrial, construction, electrical, radiological, hazardous-material, lead, and other project-specific hazards.
  • Develop and verify appropriate engineering, administrative, and work-practice controls and ensure controls are incorporated into field execution.
  • Conduct field safety observations, inspections, walkthroughs, and verification activities to confirm compliance with approved safety requirements.
  • Identify unsafe conditions, deficiencies, and changing field conditions and coordinate appropriate corrective actions.
  • Support construction and installation safety, including lifting and rigging, electrical safety, fall protection, confined space activities, and contractor safety.
  • Participate in design and engineering reviews and evaluate safety considerations related to drawings, specifications, installation plans, test procedures, operational procedures, and temporary work plans.
  • Support Work Planning and Control (WPC) activities, including work package reviews, control verification, readiness assessments, and field coordination.
  • Provide technical support for compliance with DOE, federal, client, and project-specific safety requirements.
  • Participate in readiness reviews and operational readiness activities, including hazard verification, procedure reviews, documentation reviews, and action-item closure.
  • Review incidents and near misses and support root-cause evaluations, corrective actions, lessons learned, and safety trend analysis.
  • Prepare and review technical safety documentation, including technical memoranda, safety procedures, safety plans, hazard analyses, compliance documentation, engineering evaluations, and technical reports.
  • Attend and contribute to technical meetings, safety meetings, design reviews, risk discussions, planning meetings, and readiness review meetings.
  • Support DOE reviews, independent assessments, project oversight activities, presentations, documentation updates, and corrective-action implementation.
  • Prepare field observation reports, safety assessments, compliance assessments, recommendations, and monthly status reports when required.
  • Coordinate with multiple project stakeholders to ensure safety requirements are understood, implemented, documented, and maintained throughout the project lifecycle.
Required Skills & Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health & Safety, Industrial Safety, Engineering, Construction Safety, or a related field; equivalent relevant experience may be considered.
  • 5+ years of professional safety experience, preferably supporting large-scale construction, engineering, scientific, laboratory, manufacturing, infrastructure, or complex capital projects.
  • Strong knowledge of hazard identification, risk assessment, hazard controls, work planning, and field safety oversight.
  • Experience developing or reviewing JHAs, AHDs, Job Safety Analyses, work packages, safety plans, and hazard assessments.
  • Experience with Work Planning and Control (WPC) processes.
  • Knowledge of construction and installation safety, including:
    • Electrical safety
    • Fall protection
    • Confined space
    • Lifting and rigging
    • Industrial safety
    • Contractor safety
    • Hazardous materials
    • Heavy equipment and construction activities
  • Ability to perform field inspections, observations, and safety walkthroughs and communicate corrective actions effectively.
  • Knowledge of applicable OSHA, DOE, federal, and laboratory safety requirements.
  • Experience supporting regulatory compliance assessments, audits, inspections, and corrective-action programs.
  • Ability to participate in engineering/design reviews and identify safety implications of proposed designs and installation methods.
  • Strong technical writing skills with the ability to prepare safety reports, technical memoranda, procedures, assessments, and compliance documentation.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with engineers, scientists, project managers, contractors, EH&S professionals, and laboratory personnel.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and priorities in a complex, multidisciplinary project environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
Preferred Skills
  • Experience working in a DOE National Laboratory, federal facility, research laboratory, accelerator facility, or similarly highly regulated environment.
  • Experience supporting DOE reviews, readiness reviews, independent assessments, or project oversight activities.
  • Experience with radiological safety or projects involving radiation-producing equipment/accelerator facilities.
  • Familiarity with client Work Planning and Control processes.
  • Experience supporting large-scale construction, installation, commissioning, or facility upgrade projects.
  • Professional certifications such as CSP, ASP, CHST, CIH, CPE, or equivalent safety credentials.
  • Experience with safety management systems, corrective-action tracking, incident investigation, and safety performance metrics.
  • Knowledge of root-cause analysis, lessons learned, and continuous improvement methodologies.
