The Standards Division is responsible for the testing of all commercial weighing and measuring devices to ensure their accuracy; inspecting packages to ensure that they contain the stated net contents; inspection of price scanning systems; the testing of motor fuels for compliance with standard quality specifications; inspecting LP-Gas and anhydrous ammonia installations for compliance with safety codes; providing precision mass, volume and temperature standard calibrations and the testing of grain moisture meters.
This position will primarily support the Standards Division and will report directly to the Agency Safety Director, with indirect reporting to the Standards Division Director. The office for this position will be located at the Standards Division office within the Agricultural Science Center.
This position is responsible for developing and implementing divisional safety goals, updating and maintaining safety policies, evaluating work sites - including laboratory environments - to identify potential hazards, assessing the effectiveness of existing hazard controls and providing recommendation for improvement. The role also assists with training in areas such as hazard communication (Global Harmonization Standard), PPE, hearing conservation, respiratory protection, Job Safety Analysis, accident investigation, and other topics that support agency compliance.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities / Competencies

To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following:
- Ability to develop and lead safety programs, including creating and delivering training on various safety topics.
- Working knowledge of state and federal safety regulations and Industrial Hygiene Guidelines
- Working Knowledge of chemicals and hazardous materials, including safe handling and proper procedures.
- Working Knowledge of standard laboratory practices and the ability to develop and implement laboratory safety programs and emergency response plans.
- Ability to recognize unsafe conditions and acts and the ability to determine and implement corrective actions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Management Preferences
- Experience working in a laboratory or field environment performing scientific testing.
- Experience working with hazardous waste.
- OSHA 10/30-hour Trainer and 40-hr HAZWOPER certification
- Experience with Workers Comp
- Other safety or safety-related topics would be beneficial
Minimum Education And Experience Requirements
You may qualify by an equivalent combination of education and experience, either through years of education or years of directly related experience, or a combination of both.
Bachelor s degree with a major in safety management, occupational safety, industrial technology, or one of the physical sciences from an appropriately accredited institution and a minimum of two years of progressive occupational and safety and health experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
