Safety Officer - Field Operations (PCN 10-2239)

The Department of Natural Resources, Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys, is recruiting for a Safety Officer (Field Operations) in Fairbanks.

This position is open to Alaska Residents only.

This Safety Officer position coordinates field-safety operations and equipment for the Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS). Duties include:

  • Leading the division’s field safety program and chairing the Field Operations Safety Committee.
  • Coordination of safety operations and emergency plans for individual projects.
  • Safety training coordination and instruction.
  • Management of safety and communications equipment.
  • Management of division vehicles, equipment, and warehouses.
  • Fieldwork and project support as needed.

This active safety role requires close collaboration with staff and hands-on project and personnel tracking, equipment inventory and maintenance, and in-depth knowledge of field operations using helicopters, fixed-wing aircraft, boats, snow machines, and ATVs for travel. In 2024, approximately 36 division staff members spent about 575 person-days in the field on 34 distinct field projects.

Mission and Values/Culture:

DGGS’ mission is to “determine the potential of Alaskan land for production of metals, minerals, fuels, and geothermal resources, the locations and supplies of groundwater and construction material, and the potential geologic hazards to buildings, roads, bridges, and other installations and structures” (AS 41.08.020). DGGS’ work requires field operations in often remote environments with challenging weather, terrain, and access. Our mission is only successful through safe operations, which are ensured by this position, division safety guidelines, DGGS’ Field Operations Safety Committee, and the responsible actions of all division staff.

Benefits of Joining Our Team:

DGGS offers ample opportunity for on-the-job training, a flexible work schedule, possible telework, and partnership with dedicated colleagues who are passionate about their work and the division's mission. DGGS prioritizes a respectful and inclusive workplace. This Safety Officer position is critical for the safe operations of DGGS field projects, and the work of this position is highly valued by division employees. Position reports directly to the Division Operations Manager.

The Working Environment You Can Expect:
DGGS’s two offices are in Fairbanks and at the Geologic Materials Center in Anchorage. This permanent Safety Officer position is stationed at the main DGGS Fairbanks office and oversees safety operations for all field projects, the separate Fairbanks warehouse facility, and the Geologic Materials Center core and sample repository.

We are looking for a candidate who possesses the following position-specific competencies.

  • Chemistry: Knowledge of chemicals, including hazardous materials, and their uses, interactions, dangers, production, storage, and disposal.
  • First Response: Knowledge of emergency management methods, such as first aid, rescue techniques, and threat assessments.
  • Oral and Written Communication: Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral and written presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.
