Job summary

Joseph J. Henderson & Son, Inc. is seeking an experienced Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO) for a NAVFAC construction project at Naval Station Great Lakes.

The SSHO will develop and maintain safety plans, conduct daily site inspections, lead safety meetings, and oversee high-hazard work including confined spaces, excavation, fall protection, and crane operations. Strong communication with NAVFAC COR and ability to stop work when safety is at risk are essential.

Qualifications

• Level 2 SSHO under EM 385-1-1 (2024) certification required.
• 24 hours of formal safety training in the last 5 years (in addition to OSHA 30).
• 3+ years construction safety experience in the last 10 years on projects of similar type, size, and complexity (2+ years with a qualifying safety degree or accredited certification).
• Proven experience writing and maintaining APPs and AHAs.
• Current First Aid/CPR/AED.
• Able to pass a background check for military base access (REAL ID or passport required).
• Available full time on site whenever work is being performed.

• Verify subcontractor compliance, training records, and Competent Person designations.
• Report and investigate incidents and near misses; prepare monthly exposure reports and OSHA 300/300A records.
• Serve as the contractor's safety point of contact with the NAVFAC COR, with authority to stop work.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Qualifies as a Level 1 SSHO: 5+ years of similar-project safety experience within the last 10 years
• BCSP certification (CHST, CSP, ASP, or OHST)
• 40-hour EM 385-1-1 course (2024 edition)
• Prior NAVFAC or USACE project experience, including ENG Form 6282 designation
• Competent Person training in confined space, excavation/trenching, fall protection, and scaffolding
• Experience on water or wastewater treatment projects, especially permit-required confined space work in an operating facility
