Job summary

Mortenson seeks a Senior Safety Manager to lead the Zero Injury Safety program across multiple project teams and sites in New Mexico, with the option to relocate to Denver or continue on future assignments.

You will develop and implement safety strategies, conduct hazard analyses, lead training, manage OSHA reporting, mentor safety staff, and partner with project leaders to drive safety performance.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Safety, Occupational Health, or related field (or equivalent combination).
  • High school diploma plus CHST, OSHA 500 and extensive construction safety leadership experience preferred.
  • CSP certification is preferred but not required; strong organizational and computer skills needed.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, lead, and manage Zero Injury Safety Program elements across the operating group.
  • Lead safety program collaboration with trade partners and joint-venture partners.
  • Conduct and review site hazard assessments during planning and construction.
  • Develop, schedule, and conduct safety training and orientation content.
  • Oversee safety documentation, injury and hazard statistics, and OSHA reporting.
  • Monitor construction activities through audits and observations; document deficiencies and actions.
  • Lead incident reporting, investigations, and coaching for safety managers.
  • Mentor Safety staff and provide development opportunities and learning sessions.
  • Maintain knowledge of OSHA, ANSI, and other safety standards and procedures.
  • Support safety leadership in achieving safety performance metrics; assist incident response.

Job description

Senior Safety Manager

Mortenson is looking for a Senior Safety Manager who will provide management, leadership, direction, and support within Mortenson's Zero Injury Safety program for multiple project teams and construction sites.

Project assignment starts in New Mexico with option to relocate to Denver, Colorado or continue to travel onto next project assignment.

RESPONSIBLITIES
  • Plan, lead, and manage the implementation of Zero Injury Safety Program elements and initiatives throughout the operating group
  • Lead and support safety program collaboration across multiple organizations, including trade partners and joint-venture partners
  • Conduct and review site hazard assessments with project management during planning and construction phases
  • Develop, schedule, and conduct safety training, including train-the-trainer sessions, and create group-specific safety orientation content
  • Oversee project documentation, tracking, and analysis of all Safety, Injury, and Hazard statistics, trend analyses, and OSHA reports
  • Monitor onsite construction activities through audits and observations, documenting deficiencies and corrective actions
  • Lead incident reporting, investigation, and analysis, and coach safety managers in high-risk plan review
  • Provide professional direction and mentorship to Safety staff, including development opportunities and hosting learning sessions
  • Maintain operational knowledge of construction safety, OSHA, ANSI, and other applicable standards, regulations, and procedures
  • Support the operating group safety director and safety leadership team in achieving and maintaining safety performance metrics, and assist in incident response as needed
QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s Degree in Safety, Occupational Health, or related field

OR

  • High school diploma plus CHST, OSHA 500 and a minimum of 14 years of continuous construction experience leading crews and planning work (including at least eight years as a dedicated construction safety professional responsible for managing large project and/or multi-project safety programs, conducting and reviewing hazard analyses and developing controls, conducting safety training, and working with project teams and leadership to plan work activities) and previous experience working on very large, complex projects with a high volume of subcontractor workers and managing a team of safety professionals’ preferred
  • At least six years as a dedicated construction safety professional managing project safety programs, conducting/reviewing hazard analyses, developing controls, conducting safety training, and planning work activities (or equivalent experience)
  • Experience working on large, complex projects with a high volume of subcontractor workers
  • Managing a team of safety professionals preferred
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) preferred
  • Organizational and computer skills to support multiple project teams, acting as regional/market safety lead where appropriate
  • Positive and professional attitude, strong customer service skills, and ability to interpret and communicate company policies
  • Effective public speaking and presentation skills, strong teamwork orientation, initiative, communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills
  • Ability to coach and influence operating group and project leaders in safety management
  • Active listening skills and effective communication, including openness to diverse input and feedback
  • Ability to travel up to 100%

The base pay range for this role is $119,200 - $178,900. (Actual range is higher for the following office locations: Denver, CO and Chicago, IL – 5%, Seattle, WA, and Portland, OR – 10%, Washington, D.C. – 12.5%).

Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual’s knowledge, skills, and experience, with consideration given to internal equity. This position is eligible for Mortenson’s incentive plan.
