This position is responsible for recognition, evaluation, monitoring, and control of facilities, operational, and environmental safety factors occurring in a major medical center with multiple buildings and functions related to patient care, medical education, and research. It involves managing various hazards that may threaten or impair the safety of patients, staff, visitors, and the surrounding community, impacting the ability to provide appropriate care.
The Safety Manager plans, develops, organizes, implements, evaluates, and executes safety and emergency management activities. Responsibilities include ensuring compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards such as the Joint Commission, NFPA, PA Department of Health, PA Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP), OSHA, and other relevant codes and ordinances. Guidance is provided by established policies, the Environment of Care Committee, the UPHS Corporate Director of Emergency Management and Safety, and the UPHS Director of Safety - City Hospitals.
Daily activities focus on fire safety, construction and life safety, hazardous materials and chemical safety, emergency preparedness, ergonomics, injury prevention, staff training, and education. Many activities are mandated by regulatory agencies.
The Safety Manager must identify risks and hazards related to healthcare environments and perform activities to ensure safety across the medical/health system community. The role requires leadership during emergencies, emotional stability in stressful situations, and creative problem-solving skills.
Education and Experience: Bachelor's Degree in safety, environmental science, emergency management, health administration, or related field. 5+ years in safety/emergency management, 1+ years leadership experience, healthcare setting experience, and knowledge of relevant regulations are required. Experience in academic health care is preferred.
Skills and Abilities: Sound judgment, excellent communication, multitasking, flexibility, and the ability to perform under stress are essential.
