Job summary

Johansen Construction Company is seeking a Safety Manager to lead and continuously improve our Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) programs across all operations. The role ensures compliance with federal regulations and Washington DOSH/L&I while driving a proactive, behavior-based safety culture.

You will partner with executive leadership, project teams, and field personnel to minimize risk, conduct incident investigations, deliver safety training, and maintain our APP, TRIR/DART metrics,

Qualifications

• 5+ years construction safety experience.
• OSHA 30 or OSHA 500.
• Knowledge of OSHA/DOSH/L&I construction health & safety standards.
• Strong leadership and communication skills.
• Self-motivated and committed to a people-based safety program.
• Experience with incident investigations and workers compensation claims.
• Proficiency in MS Office.
• Valid Washington State driver’s license.

SUMMARY: The Safety Manager is responsible for leading, developing, and continuously improving the company’s Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) programs across all operations. This role ensures full compliance with all federal, Washington State (DOSH/L&I), and local regulatory requirements while driving a proactive, behavior-based safety culture focused on hazard recognition, risk mitigation, and incident prevention.

The Safety Manager partners with executive leadership, project teams, and field personnel to ensure all employees return home safely each day.

KEY INTERFACES: Executive Leadership; Project Managers; Superintendents; Craft Employees; Subcontractors; Insurance Brokers; Regulatory Agencies

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Lead and maintain Accident Prevention Program (APP)
• Track KPIs (TRIR, DART, EMR, leading indicators)
• Ensure OSHA/DOSH/L&I compliance
• Conduct audits, inspections, and JHAs
• Manage subcontractor safety compliance
• Develops, delivers, and/or coordinates third party safety & environmental training
• Aids project management teams in job site hazard recognition and safety analysis
• Enforces safe work practices and safe working conditions in accordance with the APP
• Provide technical assistance and site support for all EHS programs
• Maintain fleet safety program, DOT compliance, FMSCA reporting, and the investigation of accidents involving fleet equipment and estimation of repair costs.
• Communicates and works with various third parties, including commercial insurance brokers and providers
• Lead incident investigations and corrective actions
• Administers all work-related injury/accident workers compensation claims
• Support emergency response and preparedness

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• 5+ years construction safety experience
• OSHA 30 or OSHA 500
• Knowledge of OSHA/DOSH/L&I construction health & safety standards
• Strong leadership and communication skills
• Self-motivated and committed to the importance of a people-based safety program.
• Experience with incident investigations and workers compensation claims
• Proficiency in MS Office
• Valid Washington State driver’s license

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• CHST, CSP, or ASP
• HAZWOPER
• Competent Person Trainer – Trench/Excavation, Fall Protection, Scaffolds.
• Experience and proficiency in Viewpoint and HCSS Heavy Job
