Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Safety Manager to support safety operations across our heavy civil construction projects, including large-scale data center construction.
This role will report directly to the Head of Safety and will maintain a strong presence in the field, partnering with Operations, Superintendents, Foremen, Project Managers, and Safety personnel to ensure safe work practices, regulatory compliance, accurate documentation, and consistent implementation of company safety expectations.
The ideal candidate will have hands-on heavy civil construction safety experience, prior data center project experience, and the ability to use safety data and technology—particularly HCSS Safety/HeavyJob Safety—to identify trends, improve compliance, and reduce risk.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct routine and unannounced safety inspections across active jobsites.
- Create site specific safety plans.
- Identify unsafe conditions and behaviors and work with field leadership to implement corrective actions.
- Support safety activities involving:
- Excavation and trenching
- Earthwork
- Concrete operations
- Traffic control
- Lifting and rigging
- Fall protection
- Confined spaces
- Other high-risk construction activities
- Support and enforce project-specific safety requirements on large-scale data center projects.
- Maintain and oversee safety documentation within HCSS Safety/HeavyJob Safety.
- Monitor completion and quality of:
- JHAs/JSAs
- Safety inspections
- Safety meetings
- Observations
- Near-miss reports
- Corrective actions
- Training and certification records
- Review HCSS Safety data to identify trends, recurring hazards, compliance gaps, and areas requiring additional training or field support.
- Assist with incident and near-miss investigations, including root-cause analysis and corrective-action follow-up.
- Conduct and coordinate employee safety training and new-hire safety orientation.
- Coach Superintendents and Foremen on effective safety leadership, hazard recognition, JHAs, inspections, and employee accountability.
- Assist with OSHA inspections, client audits, insurance inspections, and other regulatory or third-party reviews.
- Work closely with Operations to plan high-risk activities and develop practical safety solutions.
- Communicate significant incidents, trends, and unresolved safety concerns to the Head of Safety.
- Provide direction and support to project Safety Coordinators, Safety Technicians, or other assigned Safety personnel as needed.
- Exercise stop-work authority when an imminent danger or serious safety hazard exists.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years of construction safety experience, preferably in heavy civil construction.
- Previous safety experience on large-scale data center construction projects is required.
- Experience supporting heavy civil operations such as underground utilities, excavation, earthwork, concrete, and heavy equipment.
- Strong working knowledge of OSHA construction regulations.
- Experience conducting jobsite inspections, incident investigations, and employee safety training.
- Ability to identify hazards and develop practical corrective actions.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively with field employees, Foremen, Superintendents, Project Managers, clients, and leadership.
- Strong organizational and documentation skills.
- Ability to manage safety responsibilities across multiple active projects.
- Comfortable using mobile applications and electronic safety-management systems.
- Experience with HCSS Safety/HeavyJob Safety strongly preferred.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel regularly to active jobsites.
Preferred Qualifications
- OSHA 500 or OSHA 510.
- CHST, ASP, CSP, or similar safety certification.
- First Aid/CPR/AED certification or instructor credentials.
- Competent Person training in excavation/trenching, fall protection, confined spaces, or other applicable construction activities.
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Construction Management, Environmental Health & Safety, or a related field.
- Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus.
What We're Looking For
We are looking for someone who is comfortable being in the field and engaged with crews, not managing safety solely from behind a desk.
The successful candidate will be able to:
- Build strong working relationships with Operations while maintaining safety standards.
- Coach employees and field leadership rather than simply identify violations.
- Hold teams accountable when safety expectations are not being met.
- Recognize risks before they become incidents.
- Use safety data to identify trends and improve field performance.
- Manage the detailed documentation and client-driven requirements associated with data center construction.
- Communicate effectively with both field personnel and executive leadership.
- Help create greater safety ownership throughout the organization.
This position requires regular travel to active construction jobsites and the ability to work in both office and field environments. The Safety Manager must be comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions and walking active construction sites with uneven terrain, excavations, heavy equipment, noise, dust, and other typical heavy civil construction conditions.
Availability outside of normal business hours may occasionally be required to respond to significant incidents or project needs.
