Job description

North American Rail Solutions (NARS) is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Safety Manager to join our regional team! As a Safety Manager, you will be responsible for ensuring that our workplace is safe and free from hazards. This role is heavily involved in ensuring compliance with all Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and promoting a culture of safety within the organization. You will be responsible for developing and implementing safety policies and procedures, conducting safety training, and ensuring compliance with all safety regulations. Successful candidates have a passion for safety, are skilled observers, and leverage their influence to change unsafe behaviors.

Major Responsibilities
  • Conducts safety meetings, audits, and inspections to ensure compliance, evaluate performance, identify corrective action, and implement follow up assessments.
  • Plans, implements, and conducts preventative care, safety, and compliance training programs.
  • Plans, implements, manages, and maintains comprehensive environmental safety & health programs on premises or at project site locations.
  • Provides project management team with guidance on health and safety and confirms project site fulfills industry, local, state, and federal guidelines and regulations.
  • Collaborates with management to develop an Emergency Action Plan and serve as primary contact for project site injury and incident notification, investigation, and case management. Maintains a written log of safety inspection activities, reports, and correspondence.
  • Monitor compliance to policies and laws by inspecting employees and operations
  • Train drivers and other personnel on safety operation practices and procedures
  • Investigates accidents and incidents, identifying root causes, and develops corrective action plans to prevent future occurrences.
  • Recommend solutions to issues, improvement opportunities or new prevention measures.
  • Inspect equipment and machinery to observe possible unsafe conditions
  • Report on health and safety awareness, issues and statistics
  • Collaborate with management and employees to promote a culture of safety
  • Participates in team meetings and provides regular on-site project presence.
  • Maintains safety files and records
  • Able to travel as needed and have a valid driver’s license.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
Education Required
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Bachelors degree in Environmental Safety, Occupational Safety and Health, or related field preferred.
Work Experience Required
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in safety management in large scale commercial, government, construction industries, preferably Railroad.
  • Current certifications in First Aid, CPR, OSHA, 30-hour Construction Safety and Industry Standards.
  • Experience in OSHA, DOT (FMCSA), PHMSA, FRA and EPA regulatory requirements.
Skills & Knowledge Required
  • Extensive knowledge of environmental regulations and policies.
  • Thorough knowledge of DOT regulations and industry best practices
  • Ability to develop and deliver effective safety training programs
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficient in technology and equipment used in environmental inspections.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.
