Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health, Industrial Engineering, Operations Management, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of five years of workplace safety experience, preferably within warehouse, distribution, food, manufacturing, or logistics operations.
  • Experience managing safety programs across multiple locations.
  • Working knowledge of U.S. and Canadian workplace safety requirements.
  • Experience conducting safety audits, risk assessments, training, and incident investigations.
  • CPR, AED, and first-aid certification is preferred.

Summary/Objective:

The Safety Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing workplace health and safety programs across all 10 HOS warehouse locations in the United States and Canada. This role will establish consistent safety standards while ensuring each location complies with applicable federal, state, provincial, and local requirements.

The Safety Manager will partner with warehouse leaders, Human Resources, Quality Assurance, Fleet, and Operations teams to identify risks, prevent workplace injuries, investigate incidents, deliver safety training, and build a strong safety culture across the organization.

Essential Functions
Multi-Site Safety Management
  • Develop and manage a company-wide warehouse safety program for all U.S. and Canadian locations.
  • Establish consistent safety policies, procedures, checklists, and reporting standards.
  • Conduct regular site visits, inspections, and safety audits across all 10 warehouses.
  • Develop annual safety goals and location-specific improvement plans.
  • Partner with warehouse managers to correct unsafe conditions and behaviors.
  • Monitor completion of corrective and preventive actions.
Regulatory Compliance
  • Ensure compliance with applicable U.S. and Canadian occupational health and safety requirements.
  • Monitor changes in safety regulations and update company policies accordingly.
  • Maintain required safety records, inspection reports, training documents, and incident logs.
  • Coordinate responses to regulatory inspections, inquiries, and corrective action requirements.
  • Work with HR and Operations to ensure proper reporting of workplace injuries and incidents.
Risk Assessment and Prevention
  • Conduct job hazard analysis and workplace risk assessments.
  • Identify hazards related to forklifts, pallet jacks, loading docks, racking, machinery, material handling, slips and falls, fire safety, and warehouse traffic.
  • Recommend engineering, administrative, and personal protective equipment controls.
  • Evaluate warehouse layouts and work processes to reduce risk.
  • Oversee programs for PPE, emergency exits, fire prevention, lockout/tagout, hazard communication, ergonomics, and safe material handling.
  • Partner with Fleet and Operations on driver, yard, and loading-dock safety.
Incident Investigation and Corrective Action
  • Lead investigations of workplace injuries, near misses, property damage, and safety-related incidents.
  • Determine root causes and develop corrective and preventive action plans.
  • Track safety incidents, trends, recurrence rates, and corrective action completion.
  • Communicate investigation findings and lessons learned to appropriate stakeholders.
  • Coordinate with HR, Operations, insurance providers, and workers’ compensation partners as required.
Safety Training and Communication
  • Develop and deliver safety orientation for new employees.
  • Conduct recurring training for warehouse employees, supervisors, and managers.
  • Coordinate forklift and powered industrial truck training through qualified trainers.
  • Provide training on PPE, emergency response, fire safety, hazard communication, incident reporting, ergonomics, and safe lifting.
  • Develop safety materials in languages appropriate for the workforce.
  • Conduct toolbox talks, safety meetings, and awareness campaigns.
  • Ensure employees understand their responsibility to report hazards, injuries, and near misses.
  • Develop and maintain emergency action plans for each warehouse.
  • Coordinate evacuation drills, fire drills, and emergency-response exercises.
  • Confirm that emergency exits, fire extinguishers, first-aid supplies, signage, and evacuation maps are properly maintained.
  • Establish procedures for severe weather, fire, chemical exposure, workplace violence, and other emergencies.
  • Coordinate with local emergency-response agencies when necessary.
Safety Performance and Reporting
  • Establish and monitor safety KPIs across all warehouse locations.
  • Prepare monthly and quarterly safety reports for senior leadership.
  • Track injury rates, near misses, training completion, audit results, open corrective actions, and repeat violations.
  • Identify high-risk locations and recommend targeted interventions.
  • Recognize locations and teams demonstrating strong safety performance.
  • Support budgeting for safety equipment, training, and improvement projects.
Leadership and Collaboration
  • Serve as the primary safety advisor to warehouse and operations leadership.
  • Build accountability for safety at every level of the organization.
  • Coach managers and supervisors on enforcing safety expectations consistently.
  • Lead or facilitate location-level safety committees.
  • Collaborate with HR on employee communication, disciplinary matters, accommodations, and return-to-work programs.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives without compromising employee safety.
Required Qualification and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health, Industrial Engineering, Operations Management, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of five years of workplace safety experience, preferably within warehouse, distribution, food, manufacturing, or logistics operations.
  • Experience managing safety programs across multiple locations.
  • Working knowledge of U.S. and Canadian workplace safety requirements.
  • Experience conducting safety audits, risk assessments, training, and incident investigations.
  • Strong understanding of warehouse hazards, material-handling equipment, loading-dock operations, and PPE requirements.
  • Experience developing safety policies, procedures, and performance reports.
  • Professional safety certification such as CSP, ASP, CRSP, or equivalent is preferred.
  • Qualified forklift or powered industrial truck trainer certification is an asset.
  • CPR, AED, and first-aid certification is preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel frequently between warehouse locations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with employees at all organizational levels.
  • Bilingual English and Spanish communication skills are preferred.
