Job description

Pay or shift range: $104,000 USD–$114,000 USD. Final offers are based on skill set, experience, location, qualifications and other job-related reasons.

Qualifications and Experience
  • Certified Transportation Safety Institute (TSI) bus operator trainer.
  • Class “B” Commercial Driver License.
  • Airbrakes, and Passenger endorsements and a valid active medical examiner’s certificate.
  • At least 3 years of progressive transit experience with commercial class “B” vehicles in a fixed route transit system.
  • Knowledge of DOT policies, OSHA, NIMS, EPA standards and ADA requirements.
  • Experience developing and implementing safety program plans and procedures; conducting investigations, analyzing data, and recommending corrective action.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and safeguard sensitive material.
  • Experience conducting oral presentations and communicating technical information clearly.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a diverse workforce.
Skills
  • Working knowledge of adult education principles and practices.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, and good organizational abilities.
  • Diplomatic interpersonal skills for interactions with company personnel at all levels.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Access, Excel, and Word.

Key Accountabilities
Strategic Planning and Reporting
  • Coordinate monthly safety reporting, compile performance trends in safety KPIs, and assess delivery against location safety plans and risk assessments.
  • Inform location leadership of safety performance and provide timely alerts as necessary.
  • Drive continuous improvement in safety performance through collaboration with locations, improving leading and lagging indicators such as AFR and IFR.
  • Chair Safety and Accident Review committees.
  • Investigate incidents, accidents, and work‑related injuries; prepare reports, maintain accident registers, and coordinate with claims offices and adjusters.
  • Direct the Drug and Alcohol Program (FTA) to ensure federal and corporate compliance; manage third‑party administrators and vendors.
Safety Management System
  • Lead the site implementation of the Safety Management System Plan, safety policies, procedures, and tools to reduce accidents and injuries.
  • Monitor compliance with the company’s SMS policies and conduct an annual safety audit.
  • Ensure application of all relevant statutory and regulatory safety policies.
  • Support the maintenance manager in ensuring compliance with environmental policies and regulations.
Safety Assurance
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of risk‑control strategies.
  • Identify and assess new workplace hazards.
  • Oversee ongoing monitoring and recording of safety performance.
  • Ensure the Road Traffic Safety Management System (RTSMS) conforms to requirements and delivers intended outputs.
  • Report to management on RTSMS performance, opportunities for improvement, and needed changes or innovations.
  • Promote customer focus throughout the organization.
  • Maintain RTSMS integrity during planned changes and implementation.
Safety Promotion
  • Establish and maintain a safety‑first culture for all employees.
  • Model exemplary safety‑oriented behaviors.
  • Ensure a just culture where all employees are treated fairly and understand their safety contributions.
  • Supervise classroom and instructor quality, consistency, and training efficiency.
  • Oversee design and delivery of driver training and safety courses, including new‑hire and accident retraining.
  • Plan, schedule, and deliver monthly safety meetings.
Physical Demands and Work Environment

Work may involve long periods of walking, standing, sitting, bending, pushing, pulling, climbing, lifting, balancing, stooping, twisting, and squatting; exposure to extreme heat and cold, loud noises, fumes, and airborne particles.
