Job summary

Onyx Corporation is seeking a Safety Manager to lead health and safety programs across excavation, landscape, and materials divisions. You will partner with leadership, project managers, superintendents, and field employees to identify hazards, reduce risk, and foster a proactive safety culture.

You will own the company DOT compliance program, support workers’ compensation processes, and supervise one direct report.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Construction Management, Engineering, or related field.
  • 5–7 years of progressively responsible construction safety experience, heavy civil operations.
  • Experience administering a DOT compliance program and workers’ compensation claims support.
  • Prior supervisory, coaching or employee development experience required.
  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction and current First Aid/CPR certifications.
  • Competent Person training in excavation and trenching strongly preferred; additional OSHA, MSHA, DOT or safety credentials are a plus.
  • Proficient in MS Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word).

Responsibilities

  • Lead development, implementation, and continuous improvement of health and safety programs across excavation, landscape, and materials divisions.
  • Regularly visit jobsites to engage employees and implement corrective actions with operations.
  • Provide safety guidance for excavation, earthwork, utilities, site development, and related operations.
  • Supervise one direct report and provide clear expectations, feedback, training and development opportunities.
  • Coach project managers and supervisors on safe work planning, hazard analyses, and toolbox talks.
  • Lead incident, injury, near-miss, and property-damage investigations and verify corrective actions.
  • Conduct jobsite inspections and safety audits; track trends and resolve deficiencies.
  • Develop and coordinate safety training for employees and supervisors, including on-boarding and refresher sessions.
  • Maintain safety records and KPIs to monitor compliance and drive improvement.
  • Own and administer the DOT compliance program, including driver qualifications, registrations, drug/alcohol testing, audits, and reporting.

  • Serveasavisiblefieldleaderbyregularlyvisitingjobsites,engagingemployees,identifyinghazards,andpartneringwithoperationstoimplementpracticalcorrectiveactions.
  • Providesafetyguidanceforheavycivilactivities,includingexcavationandtrenching,cut-to-fillearthwork,undergroundutilities,sitedevelopment,heavyequipment,trucking,blasting,crushing,andmaterialhandling.
  • Superviseonedirectreportandprovideclearexpectations,regularfeedback,hands-ontraining,mentoring,anddevelopmentopportunitiestosupportcontinuedgrowthinthesafetyprofession.
  • Coachprojectmanagers,superintendents,foremen,andsupervisorsonsafeworkplanning,jobhazardanalyses,toolboxtalks,employeeengagement,andconsistentenforcementofsafetyexpectations.
  • Leadincident,injury,near-miss,andproperty-damageinvestigations;identifyrootcauses;assigncorrectiveactions;andverifytimelycompletion.
  • Conductanddocumentjobsiteinspectionsandsafetyaudits,tracktrends,andworkwithoperationsleadershiptoresolvedeficiencies.
  • Develop,deliver,andcoordinatesafetytrainingforemployeesandsupervisors,includingnew-hireorientation,task-specificinstruction,andrefreshertraining.
  • Maintainsafetyrecords,trainingdocumentation,keyperformanceindicators,andmanagementreportstomonitorcomplianceanddrivemeasurableimprovement.
  • OwnandadministerOnyxCorporation’sDOTcomplianceprogram,includingdriverqualificationfiles,requiredregistrationsandrecords,drugandalcoholtestingprogramcoordination,vehicleanddrivercompliance,audits,correctiveactions,andapplicablereporting.AdviseoperationsonOSHA,MSHA,DOT,andotherfederal,state,andlocalrequirements,andrepresentthecompanyduringinspections,investigations,andregulatoryinquiries.
  • PartnerwithHumanResources,insurancerepresentatives,medicalproviders,andcompanyleadershipintheadministrationofworkers’compensationclaims,includingtimelyreporting,investigation,documentation,claimfollow-up,return-to-workplanning,andcoordinationofmodified-dutyassignments.
  • Performotherrelateddutiesasassigned.
