Job summary

Barrett Paving Materials Inc. is seeking a motivated Safety Management Intern to join our Safety team on a hands-on, field-based internship. You will assist with inspections, incident investigations, and safety training at active paving sites to support and enhance our safety programs.

Work with safety professionals and site teams to ensure regulatory compliance and best practices, while developing a strong foundation in construction safety, risk management, and employee training.

Qualifications

• Actively pursuing a degree in Safety Management, Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Health & Safety, or a related field.
• Interest in construction, paving, and infrastructure safety practices.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Detail-oriented and proactive, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Comfortable working outdoors and visiting active construction sites.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Knowledge of OSHA or other workplace safety standards is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Assist Safety Managers with daily safety inspections and audits on construction and paving sites
• Participate in incident investigations and assist with documentation
• Help implement safety training sessions and toolbox talks for field staff
• Support the ongoing monitoring of safety practices and compliance with OSHA, EPA, and company policies
• Update and maintain safety records, incident reports, and training files
• Observe site safety procedures and identify potential hazards or unsafe behaviors
• Assist with the development and distribution of safety communications and educational materials
• Attend and contribute to safety meetings, reporting observations and improvement suggestions
• Collaborate with project management, field operations, and HR to enhance site safety culture
