Job summary

Turner Construction Company is seeking a safety intern to assist in activities related to safety and loss control on construction projects or office locations. You will support the Building L.I.F.E.

program, help identify hazards, and coordinate safety meetings under supervision. The role emphasizes learning in construction safety, reporting violations, maintaining safety records, and supporting training, with some travel and overtime as needed.

Qualifications

  • Enrolled and actively pursuing college or university degree in Occupational Safety & Health, Engineering, or related field, with at least 1 year completed.
  • Basic knowledge of safety and environmental principles.
  • Desire to work in construction management and to learn about construction industry.
  • Flexible to work standard business hours and overtime.
  • Demonstrate interpersonal skills including student leadership or volunteering.
  • Professional and clear verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proactive, curious, and eager to learn.

Responsibilities

  • Assist implementing safety programs on construction sites and offices.
  • Identify and report safety violations, especially imminent danger.
  • Coordinate safety duties for committees and meetings.
  • Coordinate training at safety meetings and orientations.
  • Review subcontractor safety programs for compliance.
  • Promote safe work practices per regulations and owner requirements.
  • Administer drug screening program as required.
  • Support preconstruction meetings and document meetings.
  • Conduct jobsite inspections and develop inspection summaries.
  • Maintain safety records (pre-task plans, JHA, training, OSHA 300, MSDS).
  • Support new employee orientation and participation tracking.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Position Description

Assist in activities associated with safety and loss control while working on construction project or office location.

Essential Duties & Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with implementing Building L.I.F.E. (Living Injury Free Everyday) and project safety program while working on construction project or office location and under direction by supervisor.
  • Assist with identifying and reporting safety violations or unsafe practices, with emphasis on situations of imminent danger to life or property.
  • Assist with coordination of safety duties for safety committees, preplanning meetings, and tool box meetings.
  • Assist with coordination of training at safety meetings, tool box meetings, and orientations.
  • Assist with reviewing subcontractor safety programs for completeness and compliance with company policies.
  • Assist with promoting safe work practices and safe working conditions in accordance with company, Federal, State and Local regulations, and owner/contractual requirements.
  • Assist with administration of drug screening program (e.g., pre‑employment, post‑accident, random, cause) aligned with company and/or client requirements.
  • Assist with preconstruction meetings and conducting research. Document meetings under direction of supervisor.
  • Assist with conducting jobsite and work area inspections and assist with developing inspection summary.
  • Assist with maintaining safety records (e.g., pre-task plans, Job Hazard Analyses, training records, tool box meetings, maintenance of the OSHA 300 log, maintenance of MSDS and chemical inventory sheets, incident investigations and metrics).
  • Assist with conducting effective worker orientation program for new employees and administer and record participation.
  • Other activities, duties, and responsibilities as assigned and under direction of supervisor.
Qualifications

The employee occasionally performs work on‑site at construction work sites, office locations, and/or off‑site venues. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

The noise in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate in an office setting. The employee is required to work in compliance with company safety policies, procedures, and applicable laws.

Benefits

Interns are eligible to accrue sick/wellness time at a rate of 1 hour for every 30 hours worked, with usage available after 90 days of employment. Medical coverage may also be elected at the employee's full cost.
