Remote: This role is categorized as remote. The successful candidate may be based anywhere in the United States and is not expected to report to a GM worksite unless directed by their manager.

The Role

The AV Safety Strategy and Assessment team is seeking a technical leader with extensive experience in the full end-to-end development lifecycle for artificial intelligence & machine learning. As the AI Safety Principal Engineer, you will need to stay current on industry best practices and standards and guide the development of GM's AI safety strategy. This role requires extensive programming and statistical techniques to solve complex problems, provide safety guidance to AI/ML engineering teams, and assess their work products.

Responsibilities

1. Train new machine learning models to solve complex business problems.
2. Enhance existing machine learning models to improve performance and adapt to changing business needs.
3. Prototype new AI solutions, including Generative AI, to address business challenges.
4. Provide guidance on business problems using statistical methods and craft ad-hoc reports to share findings and recommendations.
5. Build statistical models to depict company-wide trends.
6. Perform testing and validation of data sets.
7. Interpret data meaning and explain how teams can leverage it to improve processes.
8. Maintain structured documentation and utilize a broad toolkit of statistical methodologies.

Skills & Abilities

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field.
• 10 years of experience in machine learning, data science, or related fields.
• Extensive experience in programming frameworks such as Python, R, Java, PySpark, PyTorch, TensorFlow, Scikit-learn, LangChain, SQL.
• Expertise in AI/ML areas including LLMs, Generative AI, RAG, Deep Learning, Reinforcement Learning, NLP, SVM, XGBoost, Random Forest, Decision Trees, Clustering.
• Data engineering skills with Databricks, Hadoop, SQL, Data Pipelines, Data Preprocessing, and Feature Engineering.
• Cloud platform experience (preferred: Azure; nice-to-have: AWS, Google Cloud).
• Deployment and MLOps skills with MLflow, Docker, Kubernetes, GitHub, Jira.
• Data analysis and visualization skills with Tableau, PowerBI, Pandas, NumPy.
• Proven technical leadership in AI/ML.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
• Strong problem-solving and proactive learning attitude.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree in relevant fields.
• Extensive experience with NLP solutions and deploying Large Language Models.
• Experience developing and deploying generative AI solutions with significant business impact.
• Leadership experience managing data science teams.

Compensation & Benefits

Base salary ranges from $193,600 to $296,600 USD annually, with bonus potential based on performance. GM offers comprehensive health, wellbeing, retirement, and other benefits, including vehicle discounts and tuition assistance.
