Job summary

Kratos Defense and Security Solutions is seeking a Safety Engineer to provide safety oversight, hazard analysis, and risk-mitigation across a high-hazard aerospace environment at the Crane, IN facility. You will develop safety programs, perform analyses, and maintain essential safety documentation to ensure DoD, OSHA, and internal requirements are met.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related discipline.
• 2–5 years of system safety or aerospace safety experience.
• Experience with safety documentation, hazard tracking, or compliance assessments is desirable.

Responsibilities

• Support development and execution of system safety programs per MIL-STD-882.
• Perform hazard analyses and risk assessments across engineering, integration, testing, and facility operations.

General Job Summary

The Safety Engineer provides safety oversight, hazard analysis, and risk-mitigation support across all engineering, integration, test, and operational activities within the facility. This role ensures that safety requirements are identified, communicated, and implemented for activities involving assembly, integration, test operations, laboratory work, payload handling, and high-hazard aerospace environments. The Safety Engineer collaborates with cross-functional engineering teams, facility staff, and operations personnel to identify hazards, evaluate risk, implement controls, and ensure compliance with DoD, OSHA, customer, and internal safety requirements. This position supports mission assurance by maintaining safety documentation, conducting audits, and supporting incident investigations. The role requires sound technical judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary engineering environment.

Essential Job Functions

Primary

• Support development and execution of system safety programs in accordance with MIL-STD-882 and related standards.
• Perform hazard analyses, risk assessments, and safety evaluations across engineering, integration, testing, and facility operations.
• Assist in developing and enforcing safety protocols for Assembly, Integration, and Test (AI&T) as well as broader engineering activities across the facility.
• Prepare, update, and maintain safety documentation including Hazard Tracking Logs (HTLs), Safety Assessment Reports, and Safety Data Packages.
• Support mission assurance activities by verifying compliance with safety and quality requirements throughout the engineering and testing lifecycle.
• Participate in engineering design reviews, test readiness reviews, and safety review boards.
• Conduct safety inspections, audits, and assessments of labs, integration areas, test setups, and facility operations.
• Ordnance safety, ordnance handling, and ordnance storage safety process and procedures.
• Investigate incidents, close calls, and non-conformances; support root-cause analysis and corrective action development.
• Reports for OSHA and other federal agencies as required.

Secondary

• Assist in maintaining and updating Safety Program Plans (SSPPs) and facility-wide safety processes.
• Support Quality Management System (QMS) activities related to safety, documentation control, and corrective action follow-through.
• Collaborate with engineering teams, operations personnel, and external partners to ensure consistent safety practices across diverse technical activities.
• Participate in risk-management activities including identification of emerging hazards and tracking of mitigation actions.
• Provide safety training, guidance, and mentorship to engineering and technical teams.
• Interface with government representatives, auditors, and customer safety authorities regarding compliance and safety alignment.

Experience and Skills

Job Skills

Required

• Working knowledge of system safety principles and standards (e.g., MIL-STD-882).
• Experience performing hazard analyses, risk assessments, and safety evaluations.
• Strong analytical, documentation, and technical writing skills.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with engineers, technicians, facility personnel, and stakeholders.
• Familiarity with OSHA, DoD, or aerospace safety requirements.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance.

Preferred

• Experience supporting engineering, assembly, test operations, or high-hazard aerospace environments.
• Background in incident investigation, root-cause analysis, or corrective action processes.
• Familiarity with Quality Management Systems (ISO 9001) or internal auditing practices.
• Knowledge of range safety, energetics safety, or test operations safety requirements.
• Professional safety certifications such as ASP, CSP, CSHM, or equivalent.

Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
• 2–5 years of experience in system safety, aerospace safety, or safety engineering roles.
• Experience working in environments involving engineering development, testing, or high-hazard operations preferred.
• Experience supporting documentation development, hazard tracking, or compliance assessments is desirable.

Travel

• Up to 10%

Work Environment

Work is performed across office, laboratory, integration, test, and facility operational environments. The role supports activities involving high-hazard operations including payload handling, vehicle integration, environmental testing, laboratory work, and mission-critical configurations. The Safety Engineer must follow and enforce strict safety and security protocols, perform onsite assessments, and support test or operational events as required. Work may involve periods of hands-on inspection, coordination with engineering staff, and oversight during high-risk activities.
