Job summary

The Pennsylvania State University is seeking Safety Education Instructors to teach American Red Cross CPR/AED and First Aid courses as well as Lifeguarding courses to diverse participants on campus. Instructors must demonstrate teaching confidence, effective use of materials, and strong classroom management in a busy recreation setting.

Responsibilities include ensuring safety, completing required paperwork, and supporting lifeguard pre-employment screenings and in-services.

Qualifications

• ARC Lifeguard Instructor certification required.
• ARC CPR/First Aid Instructor certification required.
• ARC Basic Life Support Instructor certification preferred.
• Penn State Bloodborne Pathogens training completed.
• Criminal and FBI background checks completed prior to first shift.

Responsibilities

• Instruct ARC Adult CPR/AED and First Aid courses to a variety of ages and abilities.
• Instruct ARC Lifeguarding courses as needed.
• Ensure participant safety and maintain hazard-free teaching areas and equipment.
• Complete necessary paperwork and assist in lifeguard screenings and in-services.

Job Description and Position Requirements

The Department of Campus Recreation is seeking Penn State students to fill the position of Safety Education Instructor. Campus Recreation is a department within Student Affairs that provides fitness, wellness, and recreational programs to the campus community through the operation and administration of the new expanded and renovated 200,000 sf Intramural Building, the McCoy Natatorium, the 700-acre Stone Valley Outdoor Recreation Area, a Tennis Center including six clay courts and four indoor courts, the White Building, Outdoor Adventures, Aquatics, Club Sports, Fitness and Wellness Programs, and Intramural Sports.

Responsibilities

Safety Education Instructors are responsible for instructing American Red Cross Adult CPR/AED and First Aid Courses and/or American Red Cross Lifeguarding Courses to a variety of ages, experiences, learning styles and abilities of participants, meeting the outlined objectives. Instructors must demonstrate confidence, ability to use course materials effectively, classroom management skills, and knowledge of how to use the material effectively. Instructors are responsible for the safety of participants, ensuring all teaching and practice areas are free of hazards and that materials and equipment are safe. They are also expected to complete necessary paperwork, assist in lifeguard pre‑employment screenings and in‑services, manage disagreements respectfully, model positive rapport, arrive on time for all assigned shifts or secure appropriate coverage, remain calm in stressful or emergency situations, maintain regular communication with the supervisory team, interact with diverse groups, use independent judgment, and exhibit a strong sense of integrity. Instructors are expected to attend all trainings and meetings within the employee group and department, be receptive to professional and personal development, give and receive feedback, balance time commitments, recognize limitations, and work to improve while functioning as a contributing member of the Penn State Campus Recreation team.

Qualifications

Safety Education Instructors must obtain and maintain American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor or CPR/First Aid Instructor or Basic Life Support Instructor certification, as well as American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification or American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED certification, completion of Penn State University Bloodborne Pathogens training, and completion of both criminal and FBI background checks prior to first shift.

Work Hours

Safety Education Instructors can work a maximum of 24 hours (International Students 20 hours) per week during the academic year and 40 hours per week during breaks for Penn State University. Work will take place on the White Building, McCoy Natatorium (indoor or outdoor) and Intramural Building. Must be able to accommodate a variable work schedule that will include mornings, evenings, weekends; some holiday hours are required.
