Job summary

Ralph L. Wadsworth Construction seeks a Safety Director who thrives in the field and partners with operations teams to drive a strong safety culture on large-scale heavy civil projects across the Western U.S.

This role is field-oriented, requiring travel to multiple sites, mentoring field teams, and implementing comprehensive safety programs to ensure everyone goes home safely at the end of each day.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated safety leadership in heavy civil construction.
• Experience on roadway, bridges, utilities, or water facilities projects.
• Willingness to travel to active jobsites across the Western U.S.
• Strong communication with field and leadership teams.
• Knowledge of OSHA standards and construction safety best practices.
• CSP or ASP, CHST/OSHA 500/510 or related certifications.

Responsibilities

• Lead safety operations across multiple heavy civil projects.

Position Description

What You’ll Do

• Support and help lead safety operations across multiple heavy civil projects
• Travel regularly to jobsites throughout the Western U.S. to support field teams and safety initiatives
• Partner closely with operations leadership, superintendents, and project teams to proactively drive safe work practices
• Conduct jobsite audits, inspections, incident investigations, and safety coaching
• Help develop and implement company safety programs, procedures, and training initiatives
• Mentor and support field safety professionals and project leadership teams
• Assist with OSHA compliance, documentation, reporting, and corrective action follow-through
• Promote a culture where safety is viewed as an operational advantage — not just a requirement

Position Requirements

What We’re Looking For

• Strong safety leadership experience within heavy civil construction
• Experience supporting projects such as roadway, structural concrete, excavation, utilities, bridges, or water/wastewater
• Ability and willingness to travel frequently to active jobsites
• Strong communication skills with the ability to build trust in the field and with leadership teams
• Working knowledge of OSHA standards and construction safety best practices
• CSP or ASP, CHST/OSHA 500/510 or related certifications required
• Someone who is proactive, field-focused, and passionate about developing strong teams and safe projects
