Job summary

Akima Facilities Operations (AFO) is seeking a Safety Coordinator to ensure a safe, compliant work environment at a U.S. Army contractor site for Ft Sill LRC. You will lead safety programs, trainings, and incident investigations while aligning with OSHA, DoD, and Army safety standards.

You will report to the Safety Department Manager and coordinate with leads, supervisors, and managers across the contract to minimize hazards and support mission readiness.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Willingness to enroll and pass OSHA 30-Hour Certification Course.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently in absence of Safety Manager.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams).

Job description

The Safety Coordinator is responsible for ensuring a safe and compliant work environment at a U.S. Army contractor site focused on safety and support to the Ft Sill Logistics Readiness Center (LRC). The Safety Coordinator plays a critical role in fostering a culture of safety and compliance, prevention of future accidents by assessing and emphasizing proactive hazard recognition and employee education. This role ensures adherence to OSHA, DoD, and Army safety standards and actively promotes a culture of safety among all site personnel and subcontractors. The Safety Coordinator reports directly to the Safety Department Manager, meanwhile coordinating with all leads, supervisors, and other managers on the contract.

Responsibilities
  • Site Safety Oversight
    • Implement and enforce the site-specific Safety Plan in accordance with OSHA, EM 385-1-1, and Army regulations.
    • Conduct regular site inspections to identify potential hazards related to material handling, equipment movement, and personnel operations during equipment turn-in.
    • Ensure proper handling and storage of hazardous materials (HAZMAT) in compliance with EPA and Army guidelines.
    • Develops and Implements safety policies; Ensuring program adherence to minimize workplace accidents and health risks.
    • Capable of stopping workplace operations based upon the appearance and occurrence of safety violations.
  • Training & Compliance
    • Conduct safety orientations and recurring training for all personnel, including subcontractors and temporary labor.
    • Ensure employees are trained on proper PPE usage, forklift and equipment operation, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), and incident reporting procedures.
    • Maintain safety training records and certifications in accordance with contractual and regulatory requirements.
    • Compile safety data and submit monthly contract deliverables (CDRLs).
    • Independently coordinate with all departments, within Project and Safety Managerial guidance, supervising safety training and monthly compliance.
  • Incident Management
    • Lead investigations of accidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions.
    • Report findings and corrective actions to the Project Manager and Contracting Officer’s Representative (COR), as required.
    • Maintain incident logs and OSHA reporting documentation.
    • Advising and consulting with senior management on safety strategy and regulatory compliance.
  • Safety Audits & Reporting
    • Perform routine safety audits and job hazard analyses (JHAs) for all key operations, including equipment offload, inspection, and turn-in staging.
    • Track safety KPIs and prepare regular reports for internal leadership and government oversight, minimizing workplace hazards and ensuring compliance with company and government established safety standards.
    • Support government inspections and respond to safety-related inquiries or non-compliance findings; identifying root cause of problems and proactively recommending corrective actions and training plans.
    • Serve as the safety liaison between employees, management, and regulatory agencies regarding safety concerns.
  • Risk Mitigation
    • Independently develop and implement hazard control measures specific to heavy equipment, material handling, and military logistics operations.
    • Monitor environmental conditions and enforce heat stress, cold weather, or severe weather protocols as required by site conditions.
    • Coordination of workplace safety plans, standard operating procedures (SOPs) to prepare contracting staff with knowledge on responding to emergency situations.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):
    • Recordable incident rate (RIR).
    • Number of safety training hours completed per month.
    • Near miss and hazard report closure rate.
    • Audit and inspection pass rate.
    • Compliance with site-specific safety plan.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree (4 years’ accumulated college experience) required.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA 29, CFR 1910, EM 385-1-1, DA PAM 385-10, and Army site safety practices. Willingness to enroll and pass OSHA 30-Hour Certification Course.
  • Excellent communication, documentation, and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Ability to work independently as Safety professional, in absence of Safety manager.
  • Basic proficiency in the English language (reading and writing).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams).
  • Ability to pass Pre-Employment Drug Test and Background Screening.
  • Ability to receive a favorable TIER-1 investigation result, obtain and maintain a CAC.
  • Applicant must possess a REAL ID-compliant, state-issued driver’s license.
Desired Qualifications
  • One to three (1-3) years’ experience on government, military, industrial, or logistics sites preferred.
  • Certifications: OSHA 30-Hour (General Industry or Construction) preferred; ASP, GSP, CSP, CHST, or similar preferred.
  • Forklift and HAZMAT handling certification highly desired.
  • Familiarity with Army safety systems, procedures, and reporting (e.g., mishap reporting to the COR) preferred.
  • Former military or DoD contractor experience preferred.
Physical Demands And Working Environment
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform routine standing, walking, bending, and reaching tasks in warehouse and field environments.
  • Must also meet all physical requirements necessary to perform assigned duties, including working in extreme heat or cold, high, or low humidity, blowing sand and dust, confined spaces, heights, and other inclement weather conditions.
  • This position involves working both indoors and outdoors, periodic overtime, and exposure to heat, dust, cold, and adverse weather conditions.
