Job summary

DATTCO, Inc. in South Windsor, CT is seeking a Safety Coordinator to oversee the School Bus Safety Department activities.

You will coordinate safety trainings, review incidents, and ensure driver compliance with DOT and district policies. The role requires hands-on training delivery, strong computer and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work with Operations staff to improve safety and performance across the fleet.

Qualifications

• Must have valid Connecticut CDL Class B with Passenger and School Bus endorsements.
• DOT/FMCSA medical qualification standards and a valid DOT medical certificate.
• Pre-employment screenings including fingerprinting and background checks.
• Minimum age 21 and three consecutive years of driving with a valid license.
• Two years as a School Bus Driver and one year as a Safety Trainer.

Responsibilities

Job description

DATTCO is a third-generation, family-owned passenger transportation company that serves 30 school districts throughout Connecticut and Rhode Island. Our 2,500 employees transport over 140,000 students to and from school every year!

We are hiring a Safety Coordinator for our South Windsor, CT CREC location!

• Must be available for work during the summer and school vacations.

What You’ll Do:

• Responsible for oversight of established School Bus Safety Department duties.
• Ability to write narrative reports, event summaries, and activity reports.
• Coordinate and supervise activities of assigned Safety Trainers.
• Completion of applicant on-boarding process, document completion, driver training, road evaluations, accident response/investigation and drug collection.
• Assist drivers with understanding safety policies and compliance.
• Responsible for timely review, response, and reporting of accidents, safety related issues and recorded events.
• Acquire and retain safety related information for accurate dissemination.
• Work collaboratively with all Operations and Safety staff to further overall safety and operational goals.
• Reports directly to a District Safety Manager or School Bus Safety Director.

Requirements:

• Minimum two years as a School Bus Driver with previous two years accident free driving record.
• Minimum one year as a School Bus Safety Trainer.
• Strong audio/visual/electronics systems knowledge.
• Must be at least 21 years old.
• Must have at least three consecutive years of driving experience with a valid driver’s license.
• Must have an acceptable driving record and meet Connecticut DMV, school district, and DATTCO eligibility standards.
• Must possess a valid Connecticut CDL Class B with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements.
• Must meet DOT/FMCSA medical qualification standards, including the physical qualification standards in 49 CFR Part 391, and maintain a valid DOT medical certificate as required.
• Must successfully complete all required pre-employment screening, including fingerprinting, state and national criminal background checks, registry checks, driving record review, drug testing, and any other screenings required by law, Connecticut DMV, school district policy, or DATTCO policy.
• Must participate in DOT/FMCSA and/or state-required random drug and alcohol testing programs as applicable to CDL school bus drivers.
• Must complete and maintain all required Connecticut DMV school bus training, proficiency, road test, annual/in-service training, safety drills, and continuing education requirements.

• Ability to assist passengers during boarding, exiting, and emergency evacuations.
