Job summary

Benchmark Utility Services, a premier design-build and site utility contractor in Illinois, seeks a Safety Coordinator to protect workers and assets by enforcing regulations, assessing risks, and crafting safety programs across our projects.

You will lead hazard mitigation, monitor performance metrics, and drive continuous improvements to ensure compliance and minimize risk while collaborating with field teams and project leadership.

Qualifications

• 4+ years of construction safety experience or equivalent demonstrated construction safety and trade experience.
• Ability to write and apply health and safety policies and procedures.
• Experience with hazard identification and risk assessment.

Responsibilities

• Supervise safety of employees, trade partners, and the public.
• Enforce OSHA and federal/state safety standards across projects.
• Guide safety staff and assist in their development.
• Direct daily operations and identify opportunities to improve safety regulations.
• Conduct risk assessments to minimize workplace incidents and hazards.
• Investigate accidents and report findings to project teams.
• Partner with field supervision to integrate safety measures in planning.

Job Summary

The Safety Coordinator safeguards workforce and assets by enforcing regulations, assessing risks, investigating incidents, and crafting safety programs. The Safety Coordinator supports project teams, oversees hazard mitigation, monitors performance metrics, and drives continuous improvement to maintain compliance and reduce risks.

Key Roles & Responsibilities

• Supervises and ensures the safety of employees, trade partners, and public

• Enforces corporate and projects specific safety and health programs as well as federal, state, and local safety standards

• Guide safety staff and assists in their development

• Directs daily operations and identifies opportunities to improve safety regulations

• Facilitates third party safety reviews including OSHA

• Conducts risk assessments to minimize workplace accidents, occupational illness, and long-term health hazards

• Provides support to project teams on safety-related matters, including accident investigation and reporting

• Partners with field supervision to ensure safety hazard mitigation measures are included in the planning of project construction activities

• Develops and catalogs Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) specific to trenching and pipe laying

• Presents safety information and documentation to various General Contractors (GCs)

• Stays up to date with industry's best practices and regulatory changes to continuously improve safety standards

• Investigates and reports on accidents, incidents, and near-misses, and recommend corrective actions to prevent recurrence

• Performs other duties, as assigned

• Four (4) + years of relevant construction safety experience with an undergraduate degree in safety and health (or related discipline) or demonstrated construction safety and trade experience

• Agile, energetic, data driven approach to achieving individual and organizational objectives while balancing short term and long-term goals

Preferred Qualifications

• Excellent knowledge of OSHA standards and federal safety legislation
• Solid understanding of potentially hazardous materials and practices in the workplace.
• Familiarity with writing health and safety policies and procedures
• Proficiency in data analysis and reporting statistics
• Working knowledge of safety management software
• Strong communication and teamwork skills
• Excellent supervisory and leadership abilities
• OSHA 500 certification
• Bilingual (speak English and Spanish fluently)
