Job summary

Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center & Orthopedic Hospital is hiring full-time Safety Attendants for the night shift (7p–7a) to support patient safety. Training is provided, and no prior medical background is required.

You will help with daily activities, monitor patients, and maintain a safe environment under nursing supervision. Ideal candidates have a High School Diploma or GED and are willing to complete de-escalation, MOAB, and LIFE SUPPORT certifications within set timeframes.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • Previous hospital experience is preferred.
  • De-Escalation Techniques, Life Support Responder and MOAB training are required within set time frames.
  • Basic computer skills for documentation and patient safety awareness.

Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 observation and support for patients at risk to themselves or others; report concerns to nursing staff.
  • Assist patients with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, toileting, feeding, and mobility as delegated by the nurse.
  • Obtain and record vital signs and capillary glucose readings; notify nurse if results deviate from normal ranges.
  • Maintain a clean, safe environment following infection-control and safety protocols.
  • Document care accurately; respond to pages/calls and support patient transport when needed.

What You’ll Do
  • Provide 1:1 observation and support for patients whose behaviors may pose a risk to themselves or others, ensuring safety and reporting concerns to the nursing team.
  • Assist patients with simple daily activities such as bathing, dressing, toileting, feeding, and mobility as delegated by the nurse.
  • Obtain and record vital signs and capillary blood glucose readings, notifying the nurse immediately when results fall outside normal ranges (as described in the job description).
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and clutter-free environment while following infection-control, body-mechanics, and safety protocols.
  • Document care accurately and on time, respond promptly to pages or calls, and support patient transport when needed.
What We’re Looking For
  • Education: High School Diploma or GED, required.
  • Experience: Previous hospital experience, preferred.
  • Licensure/Certification:
    • De-Escalation Techniques (within 90 days of employment), required.
    • Life Support Responder (within 90 days of employment), required.
    • Management of Aggressive Behaviors (MOAB) Training (within 90 days after completion of De-Escalation Training), required.
  • Additional Skills (required):
    • Ability to successfully complete generic and department-specific skills validation and competency testing as applicable. Is knowledgeable regarding guidelines for infection control, body substance precautions, patient safety, and body mechanics. Maintains acceptable standards set by those guidelines.
    • Ability to work with all age group patients or act as a companion.
    • Basic computer skills for documentation.
