Job summary

Honda South Carolina Manufacturing is seeking an Assistant Manager, Safety to lead a team of safety professionals and drive safety excellence across operations. The role focuses on applying thorough safety knowledge to design and improve systems, processes, and tools, aligning with daily operations, new models, and business plans to meet safety targets.

The position requires extensive experience and professional certification in safety, with the ability to analyze data and present results

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Occupational Safety and Health, or other ABET-certified safety and health program or equivalent related experience.
  • 8+ years of safety experience or equivalent Honda manufacturing experience.
  • Professional certifications such as Advanced Safety Certificate, Occupational Hygiene and Safety Technician, Certified Safety Professional, Safety Management Specialist.

Responsibilities

  • Lead Plant Safety themes and complex improvement projects.
  • Manage the daily operations of a team of Safety Professionals and mentor direct reports.
  • Cycle PDCA to reduce injuries and hazards and improve safety characteristics.
  • Interpret and apply Honda Safety Management manual and policies; participate in PDCA updates.
  • Perform and document complex safety assessments, ergonomic studies, and process/equipment innovations.
  • Report safety activities with complex data analysis and trending.
  • Develop personal technical expertise and professional skills.

Job Purpose

The Assistant Manager, Safety applies their scientific and practical knowledge of the Safety compliance field in order to lead a team of safety professionals that innovate, design, and improve systems, processes, equipment, and tools to improve the Safety characteristics in alignment with daily operations, new model, business plan, and/or innovation to achieve or exceed targets and promote safety excellence.

Key Accountabilities
  • Lead Plant Safety themes and complex improvement projects.
  • Manage the daily operations of a team of Safety Professionals and mentor direct reports. Foster the technical expertise and professional skills of direct reports.
  • Leverage Safety expertise to proactively cycle PDCA to reduce injuries and hazards and ensure continuous improvement of safety characteristics of assigned areas.
  • Accurately interpret and apply the Honda Safety Management manual including NA and HDMA policies and procedures. Participate in PDCA of policies and procedures based on technical expertise.
  • Perform and document complex safety compliance activity including risk assessments, ergonomic studies, and process and equipment innovation.
  • Detailed presentation and reporting of safety activities and results including complex data analysis and trending.
  • Develop personal technical expertise and professional skills.
Qualifications, Experience, And Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Occupational Safety and Health, or other ABET-certified safety and health program or equivalent related experience.
  • 8+ years of safety experience or equivalent Honda manufacturing experience.
  • Achievement of professional certification such as Advanced Safety Certificate, Occupational Hygiene and Safety Technician, Certified Safety Professional, Safety Management Specialist.
  • Interpersonal relationship skills.
  • Detailed understanding of major health and safety regulations and injury/illness prevention strategies.
  • Ability to communicate with all levels of the organization.
  • Verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office products.
  • Strong planning and prioritization skills.
  • Advanced data analysis and problem-solving skills.
  • Complex understanding of business plan, budgeting and cost reporting.
  • Expertise with root cause analysis and implementation of countermeasures.
Working Conditions
  • Open office environment
  • Manufacturing environment (for Manufacturing Management Center assignments)
  • Overtime, holiday and weekend work possible (needs will vary)
  • Able to work varying/rotating shifts for extended periods of time if requested
  • Minimal travel requirements (<5%) with overnight stay
