Job summary

Novolex in Franklin Park, IL, is seeking a Safety & Training Manager to develop, implement, and continuously improve employee health, safety, and training programs across the plant. You will align with corporate policies, manage one direct report, and ensure compliance with OSHA regulations.

You will drive policy creation, deliver onboarding, training plans, SOPs, and coordinate with corporate EHS. The role emphasizes injury prevention, risk reduction, and a proactive safety culture to achieve

Qualifications

  • BA/BS in Occupational Safety & Health or related field preferred.
  • 5+ years of progressive health and safety experience in a manufacturing.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and the ability to influence at all levels.
  • Self-directed and able to manage multiple accounts and deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Drive the development and implementation of Health and Safety policies, procedures, and programs.
  • Maintain updated OSHA required written programs and develop training as necessary.
  • Oversee the reporting and investigations of injuries and health and safety issues.
  • Provide communication and training to plant management and coordinate with corporate EHS.
  • Manage a direct report and coordinate with engineering or contractors on safety projects.
  • Promote injury prevention and risk reduction across locations.

Job Description

Position:

The Safety & Training Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and continuously improving employee training, and health and safety programs that support a safe, skilled, and engaged workforce that is consistent with Novolex’s corporate policies, vision, and values; and is in compliance with local, state, and federal health and safety regulations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Drive the development and implementation of Health and Safety policies, procedures, and programs.
  • Maintain updated OSHA required written programs and develop/conduct training as necessary.
  • Oversee the reporting and investigations of any potential injury, accident, and/or health and safety related issues.
  • Oversee the necessary health and safety training to support and enhance the organization’s safety culture
  • Perform Managerial duties for 1 direct report
  • Develop and deploy policies, procedures, programs to support best-practice and identify best-practices with the Novolex system
  • Provide communication and training to plant management, establish and maintain communications, reporting, assessments, training programs, and guidance
  • Work with the Corporate EHS departments and provide prioritized direction and technical expertise to the engineering organizations or contractors in implementing health and safety projects
  • Be capable of sharing best practices to assist in driving change across multiple locations
  • Have a relentless pursuit for injury prevention, compliance, and risk reduction
  • Be capable of facilitating and sponsoring employee led teams that solve problems and lead the location(s) to World Class Safety
  • Be capable of aligning the local team and influencing others to achieve the desired health and safety performance objectives outlined by corporate initiatives, business unit initiatives, and local/site initiatives
  • Review and analyze data to determine the next opportunity to improve health and safety performance
  • Bring experience with innovative heath and safety compliance and risk reduction techniques via employee engagement, behavior based safety programs, risk assessments, and understanding of implementing, managing, and sustaining heath and safety programs in a manufacturing environment
  • Help coordinate and manage the standard work for hourly safety and training coordinator

Training:

  • Develop and manage the plant's training strategy for hourly and salaried employees.
  • Design and maintain standardized onboarding programs for new hires, temporary employees, and transferred employees.
  • Develop job-specific training plans, skill matrices, and qualification processes.
  • Create and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), work instructions, and training materials.
  • Coordinate refresher training and annual compliance training.
  • Evaluate training effectiveness through audits, observations, testing, and production performance.
  • Partner with department leaders to identify skill gaps and develop improvement plans.
  • Manage trainer selection, certification, and coaching.
  • Track employee training records and ensure documentation remains current.

Requirements:

  • BA/BS degree in Occupational Safety & Health, or related field is preferred.
  • Bilingual (Spanish) preferred but not necessary
  • 5+ years of progressive and related professional health and safety experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including presentation skills and the ability to communicate and influence at all levels within the organization.
  • Self-directed with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple accountabilities and multiple internal customers.
  • Strong analytical skills as well as organizational skills.
  • Solid project management capabilities with the ability to organize and manage multiple projects simultaneously from origin through execution.
  • Well-developed leadership and motivational skills with proven ability to influence and motivate others to quickly achieve results.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule during key business deadlines.
  • Ability to travel (5% - 10%).
  • Must be team oriented with the ability to work on high collaboration and performance teams.
