Safety and Security Officers (IDPL) - Administration

COMPANY DESCRIPTION

Instituto del Progreso Latino is a community organization dedicated to fostering the development of Latino(a) immigrants and their families through education, training, and employment opportunities. Founded in 1977, it has grown into a prominent educational center serving over 14,000 Chicago families annually.

Aligned with Chicago Public Schools (CPS) and ISBE, our goal is to ensure all students and children in every neighborhood have access to high-quality educational experiences, from birth through graduation, including college and career readiness.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Safety & Security Officer responds to emergencies, manages interpersonal conflicts, and guides students and staff during crises. They help maintain a safe learning environment, assist with behavior management, and supervise students and guests during various school activities and in all school buildings and parking areas.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Monitor arrivals, dismissals, parking lots, class transitions, lunch, activities, and events
  • Ensure all areas are clear and students are in class
  • Report suspicious behaviors and incidents
  • Assist with student early dismissals
  • Guide students and guests to their destinations
  • Enforce school policies on hallway and bathroom passes
  • Monitor check-in and check-out processes
  • Assist with conflict resolution and de-escalation
  • Respond to and report inappropriate or suspicious behaviors
  • Participate in safety drills (fire, lockdown, tornado, bus evacuation)
  • Maintain the integrity of school property
  • Ensure the safety of all individuals
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, AND EDUCATION
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish
  • At least 3 years’ experience in a school setting
  • Experience working with adolescents is highly preferred
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to work with diverse populations
  • Team player and independent worker
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent customer service attitude
  • Willingness to learn and grow

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Ability to operate standard office equipment, communicate effectively, and occasionally lift under 20 lbs. Approximately 50% of work time involves standing.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is distributed across multiple locations within walking distance. Requires extended hours, some non-traditional hours, and participation in organization events.
