Duties
  1. Performs inspections of the installation to determine compliance with safety and occupational health laws and regulations.
  2. Recommends measures to eliminate or control hazardous practices and conditions which may cause mishaps.
  3. Prepares supplemental written safety procedures for application to local organizational components.
  4. Investigates mishaps involving worksites, machine and equipment operations, environmental conditions, work practices, protective devices and equipment, and safety procedures to control unsafe acts and hazardous conditions.
  5. Provides guidance in the development of Job Hazard analyses.
  6. Provides formal training to employees and supervisors.
  7. Performs mishap/accident investigations to determine root cause(s), and develops recommendations to prevent reoccurrences.

Qualifications

To qualify for a Safety & Occupational Health Specialist, GS-0018-09, your resume and supporting documentation must support:

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular competencies to successfully perform the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To qualify at the GS-09 level, applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level or equivalent under other pay systems in the Federal service, military or private sector. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements including time-in-grade, time-after-competitive appointment, minimum qualifications, and any other regulatory requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Qualifying experience includes managing safety or occupational health program elements, developing safety policies, applying safety laws and regulations, developing safety standards, analyzing jobs and hazards, inspecting workplaces, and training personnel in safety and occupational health.

Experience includes paid and unpaid work, volunteer work, and service programs. Volunteer work can provide valuable training and experience that translates to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

Supporting documentation such as transcripts is required if using education to qualify. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable at application time. Graduate education or foreign education evaluations are also considered according to the guidelines provided.
