Based in Austin, TX, we’re rapidly growing as we work to deploy the world’s first fleet of advanced microreactors. Join us and help revolutionize energy for a sustainable future.

About the role

The Safeguards and Security Lead establishes and leads the Idaho Falls safeguards, physical security, access-control, and nuclear material security program supporting CTR, Aalo-0, Aalo-X, construction, testing, and operations. The Lead protects personnel, facilities, sensitive information, equipment, and nuclear material through graded, threat-informed controls that remain aligned with the applicable DOE authorization basis and future regulatory requirements. This role reports to the Senior Vice President, Nuclear Operations, with direct access to the CEO for significant security, insider-threat, or nuclear material concerns. This role includes responsibility for the physical security of the Austin TX Manufacturing and Office facilities.

What you'll do
  • Develop, implement, and maintain the safeguards and security program, plans, procedures, post orders, security risk assessments, performance measures, and corrective-action processes for Idaho Falls activities.
  • Develop and implement a physical security program for the Austin TX Manufacturing and Office facilities.
  • Establish graded physical-protection measures for site boundaries, protected areas, buildings, vital equipment, construction areas, control rooms, storage locations, and nuclear material consistent with assessed threats and applicable requirements.
  • Lead access authorization, badging, visitor control, escorting, key and credential control, alarm response, security-force interfaces, and personnel-security coordination.
  • Establish nuclear material security and control requirements for receipt, possession, use, movement, storage, inventory, tamper indication, anomaly response, and transfer; coordinate formal material control and accountability functions with qualified technical owners.
  • Develop response plans for intrusion, theft, diversion, sabotage, insider threat, suspicious behavior, security-system degradation, missing material, and law-enforcement events.
  • Coordinate security interfaces with DOE, Idaho National Laboratory, MFC, local and federal law enforcement, emergency responders, transportation organizations, and future regulators as applicable.
  • Protect security-sensitive information, vulnerability information, access records, nuclear material data, and other controlled information in coordination with information-security and records-management functions.
  • Conduct drills, performance tests, assessments, investigations, and management observations; enter deficiencies into the corrective action program and verify durable closure.
  • Stop work, restrict access, isolate areas, suspend material movement, or elevate concerns whenever physical protection, authorization, accountability, staffing, equipment, or response capability is inadequate.
Qualifications
  • Six or more years of progressively responsible nuclear safeguards, physical security, nuclear material control and accountability, law enforcement, military security, or high-consequence infrastructure protection experience.
  • Two or more years in a leading security or safeguards role at a commercial nuclear power plant, DOE nuclear facility, national laboratory, nuclear-fuel-cycle facility, or comparable high-security operation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of physical protection, access authorization, insider-threat mitigation, contingency planning, security systems, vulnerability assessment, incident response, investigations, and security performance testing.
  • Demonstrated experience protecting, controlling, or accounting for special nuclear material or other regulated nuclear material, including receipt, storage, movement, inventory, anomaly response, and transfer interfaces.
  • Working knowledge of applicable DOE safeguards and security directives and relevant NRC physical-protection and material-control requirements; ability to translate the governing authorization framework into executable controls.
  • Experience coordinating with DOE, national laboratories, law enforcement, emergency management, transportation organizations, regulators, and armed or contract protective forces.
  • Strong judgment, discretion, investigative skill, written communication, and ability to act decisively on sensitive or incomplete information.
  • Bachelor's degree in security management, criminal justice, nuclear technology, engineering, physical science, or a related field preferred; substantial directly applicable experience may be accepted in lieu of a degree.Requirements:
  • Willing to work on-site in Idaho Falls, Idaho
  • Travel to the Austin TX facilities as needed
  • Able to obtain and maintain any required DOE or other government security clearance, access authorization, and fitness-for-duty status
  • Available for security events, nuclear material movements, critical tests, nights, weekends, and rotating on-call coverage
