Description

The School Age Child Care (SACC) Teacher provides direct supervision and leadership to a group of children in a school-age program, supporting a safe, engaging environment where self-concepts are enhanced, independence is encouraged, and individuality is respected. The SACC Teacher implements daily curriculum and enrichment activities that foster children’s social, physical, spiritual, and cognitive growth in alignment with YMCA of the USA guidelines, Association policies, and applicable licensing/health requirements.

Essential Functions:

  • Model the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility with children, families, and staff.
  • Builds positive relationships with participants, families, volunteers, and colleagues; supports a welcoming environment and encourages family engagement.
  • Plans and implements daily activities (including enrichment, homework support, and recreation) that are age-appropriate and aligned with program goals and YMCA guidelines.
  • Maintains appropriate supervision at all times, including active engagement with children, consistent visual attention, and awareness of surroundings.
  • Uses positive behavior guidance strategies; supports children’s social-emotional development and models YMCA values (caring, honesty, respect, responsibility).
  • Ensures program spaces, materials, and equipment are clean, organized, and safe; completes routine safety checks and reports concerns promptly.
  • Follows YMCA policies, emergency procedures, and mandated reporting/abuse-prevention protocols, including the rule of three; responds to emergencies immediately and completes required documentation.
  • Follows all Child Care procedures and guidelines, including drop-off/pick-up protocols, attendance, ratios, health and safety requirements, incident/accident reporting, and confidentiality expectations.
  • Communicates proactively and respectfully with families and supervisors regarding daily activities, child needs, and program updates; escalates concerns appropriately.
  • Supports program operations as needed, including set-up/clean-up, assisting lead staff (Head Teacher/Coordinator/Director), and helping participants transition between activities and routines.

Attends required meetings, trainings, and in-service sessions; participates in ongoing professional development in accordance with YMCA and state licensing expectations.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must have at least one of the following:
    • High school diploma or equivalent; or
    • At least 540 hours of documented experience working with unrelated children of the same ages served by the program.
  • Upon hire, must provide documentation of a physical examination and TB screening, to be repeated per program/state requirements (typically every two years).
  • Must submit Office of Early Childhood (or applicable state agency) background check requirements, including fingerprinting, within required timelines.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead or support group activities; strong judgment, reliability, and professionalism with children and families.
  • Must be observant, safety-conscious, and able to respond calmly and quickly in emergencies; able to work flexible schedules.
  • Must complete New Employee Orientation and required safety/compliance trainings (including Child Abuse Prevention, Mandated Reporter, Bloodborne Pathogens, Employee Safety, and Hazard Communication) prior to start of position (or as assigned).
  • Connecticut Child Care CPR/First Aid certification must be obtained within 6 months of hire and maintained.
  • Administration of Medications certification preferred, as applicable to site/program needs.
