East Carolina Anesthesia Associates is the premier anesthesia group in North Carolina and we want you to join our growing team! We are seeking ambitious and driven SAAs to join our team at ECU Health due to facility and department expansions, including new ORs being added to the surgery center at ECU Health Surgicenter.

This position provides anesthetics for all ECU Health Centers. SAAs manage all anesthetics with extreme autonomy, while practicing in an ACT setting. We offer high patient acuity allowing the new SAA and/or experienced SAA to fully implement their clinical skills and education, and continue to expand within any area of expertise that may be desired. SAAs may choose to participate in the clinical instruction of anesthesia students via our on-campus program. All surgical specialties are presented and all surgical procedures are performed excluding some transplants and extreme burn cases. It is the SAA that manages all anesthetics; with encouraged and supported autonomy in practice.

Schedule: Monday-Friday, rotating call

Job Summary:

The SAAs manage all anesthetics for ECU Health, a 900+ bed academic/tertiary care Level 1 Trauma Center located in our Greenville division, and will manage all anesthetics with encouraged and supported autonomy while practicing in an ACT setting. All surgical specialties and procedures are available and performed, excluding transplant procedures and extreme burn cases. The SAA will use high patient acuity allowing the new and/or experienced SAA to fully implement their clinical skills and education, and continue to expand within any area of expertise that may be desired. SAAs may choose to participate in the clinical instruction of anesthesia students via our on-campus program and partnership.

Duties/Responsibilities:

1. Examine patients’ history for allergies or illnesses that would affect anesthesia.
2. Evaluate and prepare patients, provide education about surgeries/procedures and recovery, and discuss possible side effects.
3. Liaise with other members of the healthcare team such as MDs, nurses, and other healthcare workers.
4. Determine appropriate amount, type, and method of anesthesia administration.
5. Perform anesthetics; administer medication to patients for pain relief.
6. Supervise and assist other SAAs.
7. Oversee recovery and pain management of patients.
8. Inform patients of post-surgical and pain management procedures.
9. Assist in patient procedure preparation.
10. Provide support to other healthcare teams.
11. Advise patients on medication type and dosage.
12. Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

1. Must be a Certified Anesthesiologist Assistant, or in the process of completing the certification through an accredited CAA program.
2. Current or compact RN license in the state of North Carolina, or able to obtain NC licensure.
3. BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications required.

OR

1. Current AA license through the Medical Board.
2. BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications required.

1. Ability to provide safe pre-and post-anesthetic care using innovative and proven techniques.
2. Ability to assess patients’ medical history and plan anesthesia administration for the best outcome.
3. High patient acuity with the ability to provide compassionate care to every patient.
4. Ability to work in a team, but also autonomously when needed.
5. Strong written and oral skills with the ability to communicate clearly under pressure.
6. Proficient with technology including medical equipment and computers.
7. Maintain a friendly, collaborative attitude and professional demeanor at all times.

Work Environment/Physical Requirements:

1. Must have the ability to stand for longer periods of time and be accustomed to frequent and prolonged movement.
2. Involves frequent contact with patients, physicians, leadership, facility, and medical office staff.
3. Ability to perform work in a hospital where the environment may be stressful and often disruptive.
