POSITION SUMMARY:

Responsibilities:
Lifeguards are responsible for creating a safe environment where people can enjoy swimming and utilize the pool in a safe manner. They are responsible for overseeing those in the pool and on the pool deck. Lifeguards are required to perform lifesaving activities such as resuscitation and first aid. They must be properly certified and attend all mandatory in-service trainings. Lifeguards are to keep track of the number of people in the pool at all times and must actively monitor all swimmers in the pool and on the pool deck. This position requires active movement around the perimeter of the pool deck to ensure the safety of all swimmers. Lifeguards are required to accurately check the pool chemicals before each shift to ensure the chlorine and pH are at the recommended levels. Lifeguards are also responsible for daily cleaning and maintenance tasks as they pertain to the pool.

Average Hours: 6-8 hours/week

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Maintain continuous surveillance of swimmers in the pool and on the pool deck and identify potential safety hazards.
  2. Knowledgeable of all Gannon University and Recreation and Wellness Center policies. Must enforce and apply all policies and procedures during scheduled shift.
  3. Respond quickly, logically, and in accordance with established emergency procedures.
  4. Keep pool deck clean and organized.
  5. Utilize pool vacuum as needed and mop pool deck when appropriate.
  6. Enact rescue protocol in the event of drowning or swimming incidents including administering first aid and CPR as required.
  7. Monitor and report chemical levels in Aquatic binder. Report any imbalance of chemicals to RWC Director.
  8. Fill out appropriate reports, including headcount of people in pool and pool chemical log.
  9. Attend all in-service trainings and all staff trainings.
  10. Provide a professional, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all who enter the facility.
  11. Properly communicate with other Lifeguards and Building Supervisors.
Required Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Enrolled full-time student of Gannon University preferably with a minimum of a 2.5 GPA.
Experience: Previous lifeguarding experience preferred.
Certifications: Current Lifeguarding certification including CPR / AED.
Skills: Leadership skills including strong verbal and written communication skills, working in a team atmosphere, and professionalism. Individual must be able to work with a diverse population that would include students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members. Must be able to work independently without direct supervision on day-to-day tasks and be able to take initiative.

Physical Demands

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Swim 300 yards without stopping.
Ability to lift and carry weight, possibly up to 50lbs unassisted.
Ability to walk, stand, and move about for approximately 2-8 hours; with access to a chair.
Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
Ability to climb (stairs/ladders) or balance.
Ability to walk around building and potentially across campus.
Repetitive movement of hands, arms, and legs, such as sweeping, vacuuming, and mopping.
Meet the physical demands associated with a busy office and University environment.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is performed in a busy campus-wide setting. Some evening and weekend hours are required for activities and events which require representation from members of the Student Development and Engagement Office. Must be a team player, willing to cover or trade shifts when necessary. Must be available to work days, evenings, weekends, and campus holiday breaks as necessary.
