LOCATION: New Mexico - ideally located in or near Albuquerque or Santa Fe

SCHEDULE: Remote based, full time role covering San Juan, Rio Arriba, McKinley, Sandoval, Santa Fe, Taos, Los Alamos, Bernalillo Counties.

TRAVEL REQUIRED: 50% - 75%

COMPENSATION: $58,795.00 to $137,777.00 base salary plus potential for variable compensation and additional incentive based upon sales production as defined by the respective incentive plan. Base pay is determined by your skills, qualifications, experience, and location. Farm Credit Mid-America/Rural 1st may compensate outside of the salary range for bona fide reasons not related to membership in a protected class.

About Our Opportunity

The Rural 1st Loan Officer (RLO) is a sales position primarily responsible for building relationships with business contacts and customers in the consumer market segment. The RLO will use his or her knowledge of the consumer marketplace, products and finance to fully understand the customer's or prospect's business and personal plans and then market the Farm Credit Mid-America/Rural 1st financial services that best meet the needs.

The RLO has the responsibility for originating credit to their customers by assessing the request and obtaining business and financial information needed to determine the viability and profitability of the deal. After initially screening for soundness, the RLO submits the information to an analyst, underwriter or scoring system for final decision. The RLO leads the customer relationship and often coordinates with others to serve the customer's loan, lease, crop insurance and servicing needs.

This position requires existing NMLS registration under the SAFE Act, or the ability to obtain the same upon hire, and maintenance of a status in good standing during employment.

How You Will Spend Your Time

SALES and RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT: The Rural 1st Loan Officer develops and maintains a significant professional presence that yields sales that increase the Association’s market share in the assigned territory. The Rural 1st Loan Officer spends most of the time out of the office to build professional relationships with customers, prospective customers and influencers based on mutual trust and respect. Using an understanding of customer goals, credit strengths and weaknesses, the Rural 1st Loan Officer delivers “value added”/constructive financial information to customers.

  • Determines and defines the appropriate customer interaction and coordinates the appropriate staff that may directly or indirectly be a part of the relationship to serve the customer’s loan and servicing needs.
  • Communicates to the customer and to internal team members regarding the customer’s needs.
  • Introduces customers to the Association’s process and the team members who will support the process.


DELIVER SOUND CREDIT: As part of the ongoing consultative relationship with our customers, the Rural 1st Loan Officer:

  • Gathers and documents customer financial information and application details, in compliance with lending requirements and in coordination with Rural 1st Loan Associates.
  • Interprets and evaluates financial information and asks relevant follow-up and probing questions to determine the appropriate product or service.
  • Recommends loan terms, conditions, and collateral position consistent with the request and associated loan risks; sets clear expectations with the customer, and documents pertinent customer information in association systems.
  • Communicates credit decisions, loan terms and conditions to the customer.


SERVICE PORTFOLIO: In support of the customer, the Rural 1st Loan Officer:

  • Partners with the Rural 1st Construction team on the disbursement process in home loan construction projects.
  • Partners with Rural 1st teams to complete servicing actions required for individual customer circumstances.
  • Partners with the Customer Care team to monitor the portfolio for timely identification and servicing of loans that expose the association to risk.
  • Using knowledge of servicing options, effectively negotiates and communicates these options to the customer, and may partner with the Special Accounts team for resolution.

Minimum Education & Experience

Bachelor’s degree in agriculture, business, finance, marketing or related degree preferred. High school diploma or GED is required. Required experience includes successful experience in trainee role or in a similar field. Must be generally competent with routine customers who have basic product needs.

Preference for 5 plus years of successful experience working with complex customers who have involved product needs and handling complex credits.

Mental & Physical Requirements

While engaged in this position, team members will routinely sit, use hands for tasks, and communicate orally. Standing or walking is frequently required, while occasional demands include reaching with hands and arms, and lifting or moving up to ten pounds. Vision requirements encompass close and distance vision. The work environment typically has a moderate noise level. This role may entail a blend of mental and physical capabilities, requiring strong mental acuity, problem-solving skills, and occasional physical tasks such as standing, lifting, or extended computer usage. Some roles may require physical or mental requirements related to driving, such as a valid driver's license, and the ability to drive a long-distance.
