Job summary

Apera is seeking an experienced Camera Optomechanical Engineer to design, integrate, and qualify rugged imaging systems for defense platforms. You will own mechanical and optical packaging of camera assemblies, collaborating across optics, structures, and thermal management to ensure reliability.

This hands-on role covers from concept to environmental qualification, addressing SWaP, alignment, materials, coatings, and test procedures, with on-site work in California or Texas.

Qualifications

• B.S. in Optical/Mechanical Engineering or related field, M.S. preferred.
• 5+ years designing and integrating optomechanical or camera systems for rugged platforms.
• Strong CAD and GD&T proficiency.

Responsibilities

• Design optomechanical assemblies for cameras and sensors (lens mounts, enclosures, thermal control).
• Perform tolerance analysis and ensure structural integrity under harsh environments.
• Develop athermalized mounting solutions across temperature ranges.
• Integrate detector thermal solutions and manage SWaP constraints.
• Collaborate with optical designers using Zemax or Code V to optimize performance.
• Select materials and coatings; drive design-to-cost and DFM.
• Develop alignment, bonding, assembly, and test procedures.
• Build optical metrology and environmental test plans (interferometry, MTF, vibration).
• Support rapid prototyping and system bring-up.
• Collaborate with hardware, perception, and systems teams for flight-ready solutions.
