Job summary

Dickinson Independent School District Transportation is seeking a Routing Specialist to manage bus routes, monitor two-way radio communications, and respond to emergencies with calm, clear communication across campuses.

You will update maps, coordinate with parents, and support drivers in a fast-paced transportation department, ensuring safe and timely student transport every day.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Must meet all qualifications for a bus driver in DISD.
  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with endorsements.
  • Exemplary driving record and safe driving incentive compliance.
  • Must be able to work a split shift (6:00 a.m.–10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.–5:00 p.m.).

Responsibilities

  • Assist in solving route overloads and stops issues.
  • Monitor two-way radio communications.
  • Respond to emergencies decisively.
  • Answer and route phone calls and distribute messages.
  • Update route maps and descriptions.
  • Contact parents/guardians regarding student management issues.
  • Handle concerns from parents.
  • Train and supervise students during transport.
  • Perform as substitute driver/monitor as needed.
  • Upload Skyward daily and archive records.
  • Maintain routing information in Transfinder and Skyward.
  • Utilize Skyward, Routefinder, Transfinder, and related tools.
  • Manage multiple campus emails to assign students to routes/bus stops.
  • Edit streets/parcels in Routefinder.
  • Download Routefinder data into Infofinder.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Director of Transportation.

Position: Routing Specialist

Department: Transportation

Wage/Salary Status: Nonexempt

Reports To: Route Coordinator/Director of Transportation

Pay Grade: Per Compensation Manual

Days Employed: Per Compensation Manual

Education and/or Experience:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must meet all contractual, local, state, and federal requirements of a professional driver
  • Minimum of two years experience as a school bus driver in a public school district (preferred)
  • Must meet all qualifications for a bus driver for DISD
  • Must maintain an exemplary driving record per DISD safe driving incentive guidelines

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Must have and maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with all appropriate endorsements and classifications and all other required licenses, permits, and certifications.

Specialized knowledge and skills:

  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively and pleasantly in person, via telephone and two-way radio
  • Knowledge of record-keeping and office procedures
  • Ability to work under pressure and prioritize effectively
  • Must demonstrate diplomacy and flexibility at all times
  • Complete assigned tasks accurately with minimal supervision
  • Follow District and Transportation policies and procedures

Routing Specialist Essential Functions
  • Assist in solving such conditions as route overloads, routes needing attention, equipment needing repair, loading, and unloading stops
  • Monitor and respond to two-way radio communications
  • Respond appropriately and decisively to emergencies
  • Answer and route telephone calls; record and distribute messages in an accurate and timely manner
  • Update assigned route maps and descriptions
  • Contact parents/guardians concerning student management problems
  • Handle incoming concerns/issues from parents
  • Participate in training
  • Exercise responsible leadership
  • Perform as a substitute driver/monitor as needed
  • Take initiative in identifying and working on non-driving tasks
  • Upload Skyward every morning and send copies to archives
  • Maintain routing information on Transfinder/Skyward
  • Efficient with Zonar/Infofinder/Skyward/Routefinder programs
  • Efficiently manage multiple emails daily from all campuses to assign students to routes/bus stop locations accordingly
  • Assist in editing streets/parcels in Routefinder
  • Download information from Routefinder into Infofinder
  • Perform all other duties assigned by the Director of Transportation
