Job summary

Rumpke is seeking a Route Supervisor to oversee a team of drivers and ensure safe, reliable waste and recycling services for customers. You will coach staff, monitor performance, and enforce safety standards while coordinating daily route assignments and handling incidents.

Ideal candidates have a valid Class B CDL, strong communication, problem-solving skills, and the ability to read maps and work independently. Nights and weekends may be required to meet service needs.

Qualifications

• Valid Class B CDL and valid DOT Medical Card required.
• Must be at least 19 years old.
• No more than 3 moving violations in last 2 years.
• No DUI/OVI within last 5 years (or 2 in 10 years).
• Ability to travel between offices and work flexible hours.
• Must be able to read and speak English.
• Must successfully complete pre-employment testing.

Responsibilities

• Manage daily activities and performance of route drivers.
• Train, coach, and direct employees to improve performance.
• Monitor and enforce quality and safety standards; ensure compliance goals.
• Run routes as necessary (absences, vacations, breakdowns).
• Monitor and track attendance and performance documentation.
• Conduct driver observations and vehicle inspections.
• Plan, distribute, monitor, and follow up on route assignments.
• Investigate accidents, injuries, and property damage claims.
• Fill in during absence of other supervisors/offices/drivers.
• Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Route Supervisors are responsible for the supervision of a group of drivers to ensure safe services to customers. Route Supervisors assist management with hiring, training, coaching, performance evaluating/monitoring, and counseling of direct reports with an emphasis on safety, customer service, and productivity.

Responsibilities of Position:

• Manage the daily activities and performance of route drivers
• Train, coach, and direct employees to improve their overall performance
• Monitor and enforce quality and safety standards and ensure all compliance goals are met or exceeded
• Run routes as necessary (absences, vacations, vehicle breakdowns)
• Monitor and track employee attendance and all other required documentation relating to performance management
• Perform and monitor driver observations and vehicle inspections
• Plan, distribute, monitor, and follow-up on daily route assignments to ensure customers are serviced per company standards and agreements
• Conduct investigations for accidents, injuries, and property damage claims
• Fill in during the absence of other supervisors/office employees or drivers
• Perform other duties as assigned by management

Supervisory Responsibility:

• This position will manage6-20 employees
• This position will not oversee and direct other managers

Skills & Abilities Needed for Position:

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to lead and develop a team
• Computer skills; working knowledge of Windows applications, Microsoft applications
• Proven customer service skills
• Knowledge of the area with the ability to read maps
• Must be able to work independently, make decisions, and resolve problems
• Must have knowledge of DOT/OSHA regulations
• Ability to drive a truck with manual transmission, a plus

Experience & Knowledge Needed for Position:

• Previous management experience is preferred
• Previous waste industry experience is a plus
• 2+ years of truck driving experience is a plus

Physical Requirements in a Regular Workday:

• Frequentlylifting/carrying/pushing/pulling a max of 50 lbs
• Occasionallylifting/carrying/pushing/pulling a max of 100 lbs
• Frequentlyworking outside in changing temperatures
• Occasionallyworking in wet/humid conditions
• Occasionallyworking in areas of dust, odors, mist, gases, and other airborne matter
• Frequentlystooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling
• Frequentlyclimbing and/or balancing
• Frequentlysitting/standing/walking

Additional Working Conditions/Aspects:

• Must have at least a valid Class B CDL
• Must have a valid DOT Medical Card or able to obtain prior to hire
• Must be at least 19 years of age
• No more than 3 moving violations within the last 2 years
• Must not have any DUI's or OVI's within the last 5 years or 2 in the last 10 years
• Possible exposure to high traffic conditions and/or tight driving areas
• Exposure to residential and commercial waste
• Ability to travel between offices, as required
• Ability to workflexible hours; expected to work nights and weekends as needed
• Ability to work overtime, weekends, and/or holidays
• Must be available for 24-hour emergency calls
• Legally eligible to work in the United States
• Valid driver's license (if applicable)
• Must successfully complete pre-employment testing
• Must be able to read and speak the English language
