Job summary

City of Laredo is seeking a solid waste driver to accomplish assigned routes and provide excellent customer service. You will learn routes serving 1,200–1,300 residents, operate an automated truck, and maintain safety in all surroundings.

The role requires a High School Diploma or GED, at least two years of truck driving, and a Texas CDL-B (A preferred). You will participate in safety meetings and may train new staff as needed.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • Two years of truck driving experience are required.
  • Valid Texas Commercial Driver's License B is required; A is desirable.
  • Out-of-state license holders must obtain a Texas license within 6 months.

Responsibilities

  • Learn and memorize routes handling 1,200–1,300 residents while driving safely.
  • Operate automated truck mounted with bin lifting and emptying systems.
  • Complete WebQa/311 work orders and log activities; report issues via radio.
  • Perform pre- and post-trip inspections and basic vehicle maintenance.
  • Train new employees using prior experience and available tools.
  • Respond politely to customer questions and concerns.
  • Attend bi-weekly safety meetings and follow city/state policies.
  • Drive City of Laredo vehicle for official duties.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job description

Accomplish assigned solid waste collection routes within the given time frame. Provide customer service to citizen inquiries, comments, or concerns. Use caution in surrounding areas to ensure route is done in a safe manner.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Is responsible for learning and memorizing routes consisting of 1,200 to 1,300 residents while safely driving and utilizing an automated truck.Maintains vigilance of surroundings looking out for citizens, parked vehicles, overhead power lines, etc., in order to assure safe operations on a daily basis.
  • Is responsible for safely carrying out and completing assigned route while operating automated truck mounted with a hydraulic armand lifting and emptying garbage and recycle bins.
  • Carries out and completes assigned WebQa/311 work orders, keep logs updated and reporting violations and unsafe conditions to customer service via radio communication.
  • Conducts pre and post-trip inspection on equipment. Conduct basic maintenance including but not limited to washing, cleaning of chute and truck interior to maintain a clean and professional image.
  • Trains and/or assists in the training of new employees by relying on previous experience and capability to use the tools and equipment to achieve the objectives for the position as requested by management.
  • Responds to customer questions and needs in a polite and courteous manner and assists with any questions or concerns.
  • Attends bi-weekly safety meetings and complies with city and state policies and ordinances.
  • Will be required to drive a City vehicle for City business use.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • At least two (2) years of truck driving experience.
Foreign Education:
  • Applicants who have completed education outside of the United States must submit a foreign credential evaluation completed by a professional credential evaluation agency that is a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES)or the Association of International Credential Evaluators (AICE). The evaluation must verify the U.S. equivalency of the degree and identify the comparable U.S. degree level. Applicants are responsible for obtaining and submitting the required evaluation documentation.

Valid Licenses or Certifications
  • Valid Texas Commercial Drivers License B is required.*
  • Valid Texas Commercial Drivers License A is desirable.*

If applicant holds an out-of-state license, a State of Texas Driver License must be obtained within 6 months of employment.

As part of the minimum requirements for all positions with the City of Laredo, a thorough background check and certified school transcripts will be required from all applicants who are offered employment.
Effective February 24, 1997, all selected applicants are required to undergo a drug and alcohol test prior to employment.
Effective January 7, 2008, all persons in safety-sensitive functions/positions, as per City of Laredo Drug and Alcohol Policy definition, shall be subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
