Description

ROOFING TECHNICIAN

The posting is intended to describe the general content and requirements of this position and is not intended to be an exhaustive statement of duties.

Description This position is one of a skilled journeyman roofer and will assist the Roofing Specialist/Inspector by

performing tasks involving the inspection, installation, maintenance and repair of various types of roofing and waterproofing systems while also directing the work activities of other workers in the assigned area.

Essential Accountabilities:

· Performs emergency roof leak repairs and leak containment such as applying temporary leak stopper in the rain and/or installing a leak containment devise to catch and/or divert the water to a more desirable location.

· Installs and repairs roofing and waterproofing, such as Built-up, Modified Asphalt, EPDM, Elastomeric, etc.

· Maintains a clean, safe and minimally disruptive work area, such as barricading work area with caution tape and safety cones, using drop cloths to protect adjacent surfaces, tying off ladders to prevent them from blowing over, cleaning up daily and being aware of the inconveniences you may be causing others.

· Installs and repairs sheet metal products and equipment such as copings, pitch pockets, drainpipes, gutters, etc.

· Understands how materials and roofing systems go together and come apart in order to complete repairs to existing roofing systems.

· Builds rough wooden structures such as curbs nailers and parapet walls according to sketches, blueprints, or oral instructions.

· Applies exterior plaster, cement, stucco, or similar materials to repair masonry such as walls, ceilings, decks, floors and steps.

· Prepares walls, equipment, buildings, bridges, and other structural surfaces prior to painting/waterproofing by scraping, wire brushing and/or pressure washing.

· Performs water tests to determine a leak’s point of entry.

· Inspects construction projects, both in progress and completed, for contractual compliance and commercial approval as it relates to waterproofing and roofing.

· Removes and properly dispose of debris from roofs, gutters, downspouts and from and around roof drains and plaza deck drains.

· Maintains a daily log of repairs including location, date, time and Maximo number.

· Maintains vehicles, tools and equipment through periodic cleaning and proper maintenance.

· Monitors work activity, utilize materials, supplies and resources in a cost effective manner and ensures resources are properly allocated.

· Abides by safety rules and guidelines to prevent unsafe working conditions.

· Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in roofing and waterproofing industry by reading appropriate publications and attending related conferences and seminars.

· Drives a truck or van with a capacity of less than 26,000 GVW.

Starting Hourly Wage: $16.25 - $24.00 (Commensurate with experience and qualifications)

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

High School diploma or GED and 5 years of related experience required.

Driving record should meet University underwriting guidelines to drive vehicle in performance of University business. Current underwriting guidelines include possession a valid driver’s license, issued in the United States; at least 21 years of age; at least three years of driving experience; maintain an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

· Ability to use all hand tools associated with roofing installation including simple hand tools and specific roofing related tools

· Ability to identify safety hazards on project sites and take corrective measures to eliminate or reduce risks associated with those hazards

· Ability to communicate effectively with management as well as other workers on project sites

· Written and verbal communication skills

· Ability to train others

· Knowledge of an ability to follow safety procedures, practices and regulations

Physical:

Possess the necessary physical requirements, with or without the aid of mechanical devices, to safely perform the duties and responsibilities of this position in a timely manner to include:

· Lifting and carrying a minimum of 50 pounds.

· Climbing stairs, ladders and scaffolding, and working at heights above thirty (30) feet.

· Perform tasks requiring bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing and walking significant distances between and within buildings on campus.

· Working overhead and in confined spaces.

· Working within extreme temperature and humidity ranges with a variety of materials.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 6:00 am – 2:30 pm (subject to change to meet the needs of the University).
