Job summary

Virginia Commonwealth University invites applications for a Vivarium Manager to lead the day-to-day operations of a rodent facility in the Division of Animal Resources. You will ensure humane care and adherence to SOPs while supervising animal care technicians in a regulated environment.

This full-time, onsite role offers standard hours 7am–4pm, salary $64,000–$74,000 with comprehensive benefits. Qualified applicants will have experience in animal facilities and strong leadership skills.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated ability to foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with diverse populations.
• Significant experience working in an animal care facility.
• Direct technicians and staff in proper techniques to maintain disease-free rodent colonies.
• Effective communication with staff, investigators and supervisors.
• Proficiency with Windows-based PCs, especially Word, Excel, and email clients.
• Experience in rodent facilities management, biohazard containment to include ABSL2 operations, data management and personnel management.

Responsibilities

• Oversee day-to-day management of a rodent facility in line with SOPs to minimize infections.
• Ensure humane care and compliance with Animal Welfare Regulations and related guidelines.
• Direct daily activities of animal care technicians and supervise husbandry tasks.
• Provide staff training, supervision and evaluation.
• Develop and revise SOPs in collaboration with operations leadership.
• Communicate equipment and logistical needs to management.
