Job summary

Marmon Holdings seeks a Robotic Welding Coordinator to lead and optimize automated welding operations in our manufacturing facility. You’ll serve as the primary technical resource for robotic welding equipment, process qualification, and operator training, ensuring compliance with WPS and QPR requirements.

You will collaborate with Welding, Manufacturing, Product Engineering, Operations, and Quality to implement automation, validate weld quality, and drive continuous improvement initiatives

Qualifications

  • Associate degree or equivalent experience in welding/robotics.
  • Experience with robotic welding systems or automated manufacturing equipment.
  • Knowledge of MIG, SAW, FCAW welding processes and welding documentation.
  • Ability to read engineering drawings and welding standards.
  • Strong troubleshooting and training abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Lead robotic welding operations, troubleshoot, optimize systems for quality, productivity, and cost.
  • Maintain welding qualifications and qualification records; administer test plates and coupons.
  • Train operators and technicians on robotic welding systems and processes.
  • Support automation projects from evaluation to deployment; collaborate with engineering teams.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives focusing on safety, quality, and delivery.

The Robotic Welding Coordinator is responsible for supporting, administering, and continuously improving robotic welding operations throughout the manufacturing facility. This position serves as the primary technical resource for robotic welding equipment, welding process qualification, operator training, weld quality validation, and implementation of automated welding technologies.

The role functions as a liaison between Welding Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Product Engineering, Operations, and Quality to ensure robotic welding systems operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with all applicable Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), Qualification Procedure Records (QPR), Welder Qualifications, AAR requirements, and company standards. The position also supports future automation initiatives through participation in equipment selection, deployment, testing, process development, and workforce training.

Robotic Welding Operations
  • Robotic Welding Operations Program, troubleshoot, and optimize robotic welding systems used in tank car manufacturing.
  • Monitor robotic welding processes and adjust welding parameters to achieve quality, productivity, and cost objectives.
  • Maintain robotic welding equipment settings, software, and operating documentation.
  • Work with Maintenance and Engineering to identify and implement reliability improvements that improve equipment uptime and efficiency.
  • Support startup, commissioning, and validation of new robotic welding systems.
Welding Qualification and Compliance
  • Maintain robotic welding qualifications and qualification records.
  • Develop and administer test plates, qualification coupons, and robotic weld testing programs.
  • Ensure robotic welding processes remain compliant with approved WPS and QPR requirements.
  • Support internal and external audits related to welding processes and qualifications.
  • Review weld quality data, use root cause analysis techniques, and recommend corrective actions when required.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable AAR, customer, regulatory, and company welding requirements.
Training and Workforce Development
  • Train hourly employees, technicians, and supervisors on robotic welding systems and automated welding processes.
  • Develop training materials, qualification standards, and operator certification requirements.
  • Evaluate operator proficiency and recommend additional training when necessary.
  • Support implementation of best practices related to automation and robotic welding technology.
Automation and Technology Deployment
  • Participate in evaluation, specification, and purchasing of robotic welding and automated manufacturing equipment.
  • Assist in development and execution of automated welding projects.
  • Serve on cross-functional project teams supporting manufacturing automation initiatives.
  • Collaborate with Product Engineering and Manufacturing Engineering to ensure designs, tooling, fixtures, and welding processes are optimized for automation.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement through automation and advanced manufacturing technologies.
Quality and Continuous Improvement
  • Inspect and evaluate weld quality produced by robotic systems.
  • Ensure quality compliance based on welding performance data.
  • Analyze current processes and implement process improvements.
  • Create 5S structure for current and new procedures.
  • Support root cause investigations related to welding quality issues.
  • Develop standardized work practices for robotic welding operations.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives focused on safety, quality, delivery, and productivity.
Required Qualifications
  • Associate degree in Welding Technology, Robotics, Manufacturing Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or related field; equivalent experience may be considered.
  • Experience with robotic welding systems, automated manufacturing equipment, or industrial robotics.
  • Working knowledge of MIG, SAW, and FCAW welding processes, welding symbols, metallurgy, Welding Procedure Specifications, and qualification standards.
  • Understanding of automated manufacturing systems and controls.
  • Working knowledge of Fronius, Lincoln, and Miller power sources.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications, and welding documentation.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective communication and training skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Welding Engineering Technology, Robotics, or related field.
  • Robotic programming experience with offline programming (Visual Components).
  • Experience with CAD/CAM software (SolidWorks) AWS, CWI, or other welding-related certifications.
  • Experience in railcar, heavy manufacturing, pressure vessel, or automated fabrication environments.
  • Project management experience supporting capital or automation projects.
  • Knowledge of Kuka, Yaskawa, Fanuc industrial robots.
Physical and Work Environment Requirements
  • Ability to work in both office and manufacturing environments.
  • Frequent plant-floor interaction around welding and automated production equipment.
  • Ability to travel periodically to support training, equipment suppliers, or other locations.
  • Ability to wear required PPE and safely work around industrial equipment.
