Job description

Description

Are you passionate about building and maintaining the infrastructure that powers some of the world's most impactful technology? Do you thrive when diagnosing complex system issues, turning manual processes into automated solutions, and driving projects from concept to completion? As a Systems Administrator Engineer III at Amazon, you will serve as a technical leader responsible for designing, operating, and improving the systems and services that keep our operations running smoothly. You will work across multiple technology domains, including operating systems, networking, hardware, and software, to solve challenging problems and deliver reliable, high-performing infrastructure. This role blends hands-on engineering with project leadership, giving you the opportunity to plan and execute technical initiatives, mentor fellow engineers, and shape the technical direction of your team while collaborating with partners across the organization.

Key job responsibilities
  • Lead the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of systems and services within your team's scope, ensuring they are highly available, performant, secure, and maintainable.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex technical issues across multiple technology areas, determining both short-term mitigations and long-term solutions while minimizing customer impact.
  • Plan and manage technical projects end to end, including scoping work, defining milestones, tracking deliverables, and coordinating across teams to keep initiatives on schedule.
  • Develop and maintain automation that simplifies operational workloads, scales infrastructure, and reduces points of failure across managed systems.
  • Drive the creation and review of standard operating procedures, runbooks, and technical documentation while communicating project status, trade-offs, and risks to both technical and non-technical audiences.
A day in the life

You might start your morning reviewing system health dashboards and triaging alerts before joining a project stand-up to check progress against milestones. After lunch, you could be leading an implementation review with your team, then coordinating with partner teams on dependencies for an upcoming deployment. Later in the afternoon, you shift to root-cause analysis on a performance anomaly, documenting findings and updating your project tracker before wrapping up.
