Job summary

UPMC is seeking a perioperative First Assistant (STFA) to support surgeons under the physician's direction. The role includes assisting in operations, setting up the OR, preparing and transporting patients, passing instruments, and aiding in wound closure and retractors.

Eligible candidates may receive a sign-on bonus of up to $25,000. Requirements include CST certification and completion of an STFA program within two years, with emphasis on patient safety and ongoing professional development.

Qualifications

• Qualified Surgical Technologist with CST certification and STFA training.
• Must have at least 1 year of operating room experience as STFA.
• Familiarity with surgical anatomy and sterile technique.

Responsibilities

• Provide competent and ethical care within legal standards of practice as applicable to the STFA.
• Maintains regulatory, credentialing, and privileging requirements.
• Assume responsibility for personal development and education.
• Know and follow all organizational/departmental policies/procedures.
• Incorporate leading/evidence-based practice in quality/safety into everyday work.
• Assist surgeon during operating room procedures, including positioning, prepping, and draping of the patient; provide homeostasis via electrocautery, vessel clamping, and suturing as directed by the surgeon.
• Applies knowledge of surgical anatomy and procedure steps; follows physician preferences.
• Acts as a patient advocate and maintains privacy and confidentiality.
• Serves as educator and resource to colleagues regarding STFA activities and robotic surgery.
• 1 year of experience required.
