Job summary

Field AI in Irvine, CA is seeking a Mechanical Engineer Intern on the Hardware Team to design and prototype mechanical systems that house sensing and compute platforms for rugged field deployment. You will work across CAD (SolidWorks), FEA/thermal analysis, fabrication, and testing, collaborating with electrical and software engineers to deliver field-ready hardware.

The role emphasizes production readiness, design for manufacturing, and documentation, with opportunities to contribute to IP

Qualifications

Pursuing a B.S./M.S./Ph.D. in Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field.
Proficient with SolidWorks or equivalent mechanical CAD.
Familiarity with FEA and thermal modeling tools.
Experience designing hardware that survives vibration, shock, thermal cycling, and environmental exposure.
Knowledge of CNC, sheet metal, additive manufacturing, and assembly workflows.
Experience integrating mechanical systems with compute, sensors, and power electronics.
Lab skills in mechanical debugging, thermal test setups, vibration tables, and ingress testing.
Ability to contribute across teams for integrated systems.

Responsibilities

Mechanical System Design: design external enclosures, internal compute frames, and payload mounts.
Mechanical System Implementation: CAD assemblies, FEA, thermal simulations, and production-ready design.
Mechanical System Production & Servicing: vendor coordination, QA checks, and field support.
