Level: Mid to Senior |Department: Manufacturing Engineering| Location: Woodridge, IL
Position Overview
As a Mechanical Engineer – Robotics Integration, you will work alongside our Manufacturing Engineers with a focused emphasis on robotics and tooling development. You will design, build, program, and integrate industrial and collaborative robotic work cells and the tooling, fixtures, and guarding that support them, improving the safety, quality, throughput, and cost of our manufacturing operations. From concept and design through build, integration, safety validation, and production launch, you will bring robust, reliable automation and tooling to the production floor while partnering closely with Manufacturing, Quality, Maintenance, and Design Engineering.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, program, integrate, and deploy robotic work cells — industrial and collaborative (cobot) — for assembly, material handling, dispensing, inspection, and test.
- Design mechanical tooling, fixtures, end-of-arm tooling (EOAT), and safety guarding, and produce engineering drawings and 3D models.
- Develop and troubleshoot robot programs, PLC/HMI logic, servo/drive motion control, and industrial networking between cell components and plant systems.
- Specify and integrate pneumatics, sensors, actuators, and safety devices (light curtains, interlocks, safety-rated controllers) into automated cells.
- Develop machine-vision systems for robot guidance, inspection, measurement, and traceability.
- Perform risk assessments and ensure all robotic systems comply with applicable machine-safety, electrical, and OSHA standards (e.g., ANSI/RIA R15.06 / ISO 10218, ISO/TS 15066 for collaborative applications, NFPA 79, lockout/tagout).
- Fabricate and machine tooling and fixture components, or coordinate their fabrication, to support cell builds and prototypes.
- Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineering, Design Engineering, and customer representatives on design for automation and design for manufacturability (DFM) to ensure products and processes are suited to robotic assembly and test.
- Support installation, commissioning, acceptance, debug, and production hand-off of robotic cells and tooling.
- Develop documentation, standard work, and training, and instruct operators, technicians, and maintenance staff on the operation and troubleshooting of robotic systems.
- Partner with Maintenance to develop preventive maintenance procedures and maximize equipment uptime and reliability.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to reduce cycle time, downtime, scrap, and labor cost using lean manufacturing and Six Sigma methodologies.
- Support new product introduction (NPI) and capital projects, including vendor selection, evaluation, acquisition, validation, and process development for new robotic and tooling investments.
- Ensure robotic processes and tooling are defined and maintained in accordance with IATF 16949 and ISO 9001 methodology, and conduct DOE, capability testing, and ROI analysis to justify investments.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering required.
- 5+ years of experience in robotics integration, automation, and/or tooling development in a manufacturing environment.
- Experience with industrial and/or collaborative robotics required.
- Experience with safety guarding and machine-safety standards and safeguarding design.
- Experience with drives and PLCs.
- Experience with industrial networking.
- Experience with pneumatics.
- Tooling and fixture design experience.
- Machining experience (manual and/or CNC) for tooling and fixture fabrication.
- Experience with vision systems for inspection, measurement, or robot guidance.
- Techman robots and Creo are the preferred platforms; equivalent experience with other industrial/collaborative robot and CAD platforms is acceptable.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Six Sigma, SPC, FMEA, root cause analysis, and lean manufacturing.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical, pneumatic, and mechanical diagrams.
- Familiarity with IATF 16949 and ISO 9001 quality systems; electronics or PCBA manufacturing experience a plus.
- Strong, systematic problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to manage projects from concept through production launch and to collaborate effectively across cross-functional teams.
- Maintain professionalism while dealing with frequent change, delays, unexpected events, or time demands.
- Effectively communicate, both in writing and verbally, with people of various educational and technical backgrounds.
