About the Company

Gear 5 Automation is an engineering services company based in Brighton, Michigan. We provide engineering support to manufacturers through robotics, controls, vision systems, PLC programming, electrical design, AutoCAD, and E-plan work. Engineers have the opportunity to solve different technical challenges, support a variety of customer environments, and build experience across a broad range of automation applications.

Role Overview

We are hiring an experienced industrial Robotics Engineer to configure, integrate, commission, and support FANUC robot systems.

This is a hands-on role for someone who can take ownership of a robot application from initial setup through commissioning. You should be comfortable working independently at customer facilities, solving technical problems in real time, and adjusting your approach as equipment, processes, and production requirements change.

The position is home-based, but travel is a significant part of the job. You should expect to spend approximately 75% of your time at customer locations.

Responsibilities
  • Set up, program, integrate, and commission FANUC robot systems from the ground up.
  • Configure robot tool center points, frames, payloads, safety settings, external axes, communications, and I/O.
  • Integrate and troubleshoot 2D vision systems used for robot guidance and manufacturing applications.
  • Support the setup and operation of material-handling, dispensing, welding, assembly, and related automation applications.
  • Develop offline robot programs and simulations to validate processes, robot motion, reach, and cycle time before deployment.
  • Commission equipment at customer facilities and solve technical issues during installation, startup, and production.
  • Evaluate cycle time, robot motion, equipment behavior, and process requirements to improve system performance.
  • Work with customer teams and other engineers to understand production needs, make practical technical decisions, and complete projects safely and efficiently.
Required Qualifications
  • Strong hands-on experience programming and commissioning FANUC industrial robots.
  • Ability to set up and integrate a FANUC robot system from scratch.
  • Experience taking robot applications through installation, integration, startup, troubleshooting, and customer commissioning.
  • Experience configuring FANUC 2D vision or comparable robot-guidance vision systems.
  • Completion of relevant FANUC training or classes.
  • Working knowledge of robot I/O, communications, tool center points, user frames, payloads, safety configuration, and peripheral equipment.
  • Ability to troubleshoot technical problems independently in an active manufacturing environment.
  • Willingness and ability to travel approximately 75% to customer sites.
  • We welcome applicants who developed their expertise through FANUC training, technical programs, field experience, or hands-on learning.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with FANUC 3DV or other 3D vision applications.
  • Experience with FANUC RoboGuide or other offline robot programming and simulation work.
  • Background with a systems integrator or engineering services company.
  • Experience supporting automotive, general manufacturing, or defense-related automation projects.
  • Experience with one or more industrial robot applications, including material handling, dispensing, paint, spot welding, arc welding, or laser welding.
  • Experience leading robotics projects or mentoring other engineers.
