Job description

Robotics and Mechanical Design Engineering Scientist

Apply for the Robotics and Mechanical Design Engineering Scientist role at The University of Texas at Austin.

Responsibilities
  • Design, analyze and develop sonar/navigation/underwater robotics equipment using SolidWorks and SolidWorks Simulation.
  • Create drawings, assembly instructions, and other supporting documentation for systems.
  • Assist in the assembly and testing of equipment.
  • Participate in data collection exercises, data management, and analysis.
  • Support the installation and testing of equipment in field locations.
  • Other related functions as needed.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related field.
  • Three years of related/applied research and development experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to design, evaluate, and document complex systems using CAD programs.
  • Applicant must have a robotics background.
  • Applicant must have a demonstrated ability to follow design and testing standards.
  • US Citizen. Applicant selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information at the level appropriate to the project requirements of the position.
  • Highly organized, excellent attention to detail, and possess sound scientific judgment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in mechanical engineering preferred.
  • Three or more years of applicable development using SolidWorks and performing finite element analyses.
  • Familiarity with PDM document management system.
  • Experience with designing underwater systems and robotics systems; experience leading a team of engineers.
  • Experience with adhesives, molded parts, electronics packaging, seal design, cabling, machine/mechanism design, and other electro‑mechanical design.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in statics analysis, material analysis, thermal analysis, vibration, finite element analysis, corrosion, fluid dynamics, acoustics.
  • Hands‑on experience with hand tools, power tools, machining (mill, lathe, laser cutter, etc.). Familiarity with modern design practices and manufacturing processes including rapid prototyping.
  • Prior work experience in professional or research‑oriented development.
  • Prior military experience.
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal communication skills.
Salary

$104,000–$174,000+ / negotiable depending on qualifications.
