Job summary

Qualifications

  • 2–5 years of robotic welding programming experience in metal fabrication/manufacturing.
  • Experience programming industrial robotic welding systems (FANUC/ABB/Yaskawa).
  • Ability to read engineering drawings, welding symbols, and CAD models.
  • Familiarity with AWS D1.1 and ISO welding standards.

Job description

Position Summary

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Robotic Weld Programmer & Automation Technician to join our metal fabrication team. This position is responsible for programming, setting up, troubleshooting, and optimizing robotic and collaborative (cobot) welding systems to ensure consistent, high-quality welds and efficient production performance. The ideal candidate will have experience with robotic welding technology, metal fabrication processes, and continuous improvement initiatives in a manufacturing environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties are representative of the position and are not intended to be all-inclusive. Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed.

  • Develop, program, and optimize robotic and cobot welding applications to improve productivity, quality, and efficiency.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, welding symbols, and CAD models to determine welding requirements and specifications.
  • Set up, calibrate, and validate robotic welding equipment, including welding parameters based on material type, thickness, and joint configuration.
  • Conduct test runs and first-piece validations to verify weld quality and process repeatability.
  • Monitor robotic welding operations and troubleshoot programming, equipment, and process issues to minimize downtime.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Production, Quality, and Maintenance teams to improve welding processes and meet customer and project requirements.
  • Train operators and technicians on robotic welding system operation, troubleshooting, and basic maintenance procedures.
  • Maintain programming documentation, welding procedures, setup instructions, and process records.
  • Ensure compliance with company safety policies and applicable welding standards, including AWS and ISO requirements.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Support fixture development, tooling improvements, and automation projects as required.
  • Assist with new product launches and process validations related to robotic welding operations

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Education

  • Associate degree, technical diploma, or certification in Welding Technology, Robotics, Manufacturing Technology, or a related field preferred.
  • Equivalent combination of education and relevant experience will be considered.

Experience

  • Minimum of 2 to 5 years of robotic welding programming experience within a metal fabrication or manufacturing environment.
  • Experience programming industrial robotic welding systems such as FANUC, ABB, Yaskawa/Motoman, Universal Robots, or similar platforms preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in robotic welding setup, optimization, and troubleshooting.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong understanding of MIG welding processes, metallurgy, and fabrication techniques.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, weld symbols, and GD&T.
  • Knowledge of welding codes and standards, including AWS D1.1 and applicable ISO standards.
  • Experience with fixture design, tooling, and process development.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a cross-functional team.
  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or continuous improvement methodologies is preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and basic CAD software is a plus.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, and perform repetitive movements throughout the workday.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with exposure to noise, heat, moving equipment, and welding fumes while utilizing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to distinguish colors and visual indicators used in welding and robotic operations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • AWS welding certifications.
  • Experience with offline robotic programming software.
  • Experience with automated fixture design and weld cell integration.
  • Knowledge of robotic vision systems and advanced automation technologies.
